Post Surgery Pills and hives!
May 30th, 2005 at 3:51am

Hi everyone...

just wanted to inquire about the drugs that people are taking after surgery...

i am taking vicodin for pain, along with a nausea pill called Tigan, an anti-seizure medicine called Dilantin and then of course aspirin....

2 nights ago i wound up in the emergency room because of hives and once the hives spread to my neck i started to breathe funny...they fixed me with a benadryl IV, and im taking benedryl along with my pills now...

i suspect the hives could be because of the Dilantin- but i have no idea, and since its a holiday weekend i cant talk to my doctor and the ER folks dont want to say that i should stop taking anything that may be crucial post surgery...is Dilantin standard and will i take it the rest of my life?

has anyone had this experience with the hives?

ive been complaining a lot! im sorry. i really am doing good for the most part!! Smiley  and i'm happy...

i appreciate all the advice.

Shanna

Shanna,
It's very important to determine which drug is causing the hives, so you can avoid it in the future.  If it turns out Vicodan is causing the hives, then you need to avoid all drugs in that family (ditto with whichever drug is the problem).  You might ask to switch from Vicodan to Fentanyl.
Best,

Hi Shanna,

This isn't related to your question regarding post surgery, but my sister did have a very similar incident a few weeks ago. She had an angiogram on one day and the next day she began getting severe hives and eventually difficulty breathing. We went to the emergency room and she was given benadryl and cortisone. We assumed it was the dye used for the angio, but several doctors said, the exact cause of hives is often hard to determine. We were told, too many other common factors could be involved, like drug allergies from other meds she takes, infections, food allergies, environmental factors, such as pollen, heat or cold, and even stress could caused the hives. So they said we might never know the exact cause.

Thought it was worth mentioning. Youre in my prayers.

After her first surgery Kathleen was given Phenabarb.(sp?) for possible seizures, this caused an allergic reaction in her.She was furiously rubbing at her face like it was "crawling with bugs or something" and crying. She too was given Benadryl and they changed the seizure medication. She was only kept on it for about 5-6 months.
