Recovery period?...Meds after surgery
Jun 11th, 2005 at 10:29pm

It's been 15 days since my double bypass surgery (right side).  My head is still slightly swollen, and the area around the incision is "numb."  My right eye also looks like bruising is setting in.  (It's worst in the morning after I lay down...is this normal?)  The area between my right eye and about an inch or two down my right cheek also has a "tight" feeling.  Is this normal?  Has anybody else felt like this?  How long until I regain the ability to "feel" the area around the incision?

I'm now taking Plavix 75 mg and 325 mg aspirin, as well as 300 mg of Dilantin for seizures.  I've never had seizures prior to the surgery, but could the surgery increase my chances of post op seizures?  Can you tell if you will have a seizure?  How long do they last?  I've also been given vicodin, but I'm trying to limit myself and eventually get off of it.

Is there anything else "post op" that I should be looking out for?

Thank you in advance for any response..

Aloha

hi shan. Cheesy

just remember you just had brain surgery...if you are up and typing on the computer you must be doing good.  ;Grin

Recovery varies greatly from one person to another so there are no set guidelines, timelines.

Cara being six and half was "very aware" of all her TIA's (seizures that you call them).  She had an EEG and 24hr EEG which both say they aren't seizures....in a six week period two weeks after her second surgery...she experienced over 140 of them...very tiny, and is aware of it happening....she can't talk, like her tongue is frozen, she walks over to me and with her finger writes "TIA" in the air.  I ask her how old are you...in the air she makes a six...a second later she talks again...Mommy, I am six"...then she lets out a big yawn.

You were put on anti seizure medication so you shouldn't experience them....Cara wasn't put on anything as she didn't have any TIA's / seizures prior to surgeries...and I wondered why some people who posted said (like u) were put on those medication.  Caras TIA's were like at the most no more than 15 seconds from start to yawn (end)...but when she had up to 8 to 12 a day...that was too much.

We can't really know what kind of stuff could happen during the post op recovery either.  Some never experience what others experience.  No one on the site has had what Cara has gone through...one even told me it was too extreme.  Most would have one TIA now and then which is more common. (one a week or one a month or even none at all...or maybe one six months post surgery....even a year or two from surgery).

It sounds like you're doing great....take it easy and get lots of rests, naps....you'll be your old self in no time.

Welcome home Shannon!

This is Colleen...we talked just before you left for North Caroline as you were leaving for the airport.  I'm so glad that everything went smoothly.  I have been praying for you and wondering how things went!  Dr. Fukushima is amazing and I believe is truely gifted!

As for your recovery period...give yourself time to heal.  I too had a black eye for several weeks and my right eye is still swollen off and on and droops a bit.  Dr. Fukushima said that that will go away in time as he did an indirect over my right eye along w/a direct bypass.   Also, Dr. Graham, my local neurosurgeon that is following me here in Hawaii is watching me carefully along w/my neurologist Dr. Wong.  If this is your team as well...you are in good hands!  Anyway, I was also on Dilantin and have not had any seizures post-op (knock wood) and am also on Plavix.  It has now been about 1 month and 3 weeks since my surgery and I have just started back to work part-time as of last week.  I also started driving about two weeks ago!

As for the numbness on your head, I am still numb around the incision site and it is still tender to touch.  When I lie down at night...I head the whooshing sounds and my head pulses in the area where I had my indirect done and on the right side of my head.  I did have my hair cut last week and my hairdresser was very careful around the incision sites.

Don't forget...take your time and give your body time to head.  Get lots of rest and drink alot of fluids.  Call me anytime...I am usually home in the afternoon.

With Much Aloha,
Colleen

Colleen!!!

So good to hear from you.  I can't thank you enough for your support and talking to me before I left for North Carolina.  You were right, Dr. Fukushima was exceptionally nice...and so was Lori.  I have to get an angiogram in about a year and was planning to go back to NC...  I ended up at Wake Med instead of Duke Raleigh Community Hospital.  Their hospital is amazing!  It's huge!!  The nurses were also incredibly nice, and I'm actually keeping in touch with one of the NICU secretary/nurses!

I hope to meet you and ______ (works at All-State) someday.  When do you guys have "reunions?"  I thought it said that MoyaMoya affects 1 in 2 million people...but I think with all of us here locally, the percentage should be higher.

Do you still have my number?  I'll have to get yours again from Dr. T.

It's great to hear from you!!!  You're so sweet...

Aloha,
SFH

Cara's Mom,

Thanks for your response.  Wow, I'll keep Cara in my prayers as well.  This whole thing is new to me.  I wasn't having seizures prior to the surgery, but my doc has me on anti-seizure medicine (Dilantin) just in case (I guess).  I sometimes feel that my tongue feels "thick", and sometimes I feel like I have hard time breathing from my throat area.  I read other's messages and some say they got allergic reactions to Dilantin.

Well, thanks again for your kind words.  "God doesn't give us anything we can't handle."  Cara seems like a very smart and special girl.... God bless her!

Take care & Keep in touch,
SFH
