Hello everyone!

I have a question regarding possible suppliments/complimentary medicine/herbs that can be taken   by MM patients. has anyone heard of Gingko Biloba -
i wonder whether it actually helps with the blood flow, or if it actually increases the danger of hemmorhage. does anyone take any suppliments??  Smiley

Lumi,

That is a good question...I wish I knew more.  I'd love to know if there were alternatives to aspirin.  My daughter has a sensitive little tummy, and we worry about ulcers.   Of course, we worry a lot more about stroke risk, so I am too afraid to seriously consider anything different.

My step-father read about something called Natto (or Nattokinaise) that sounded pretty interesting as far as improving circulation/blood flow, but I'd never risk it!

Please let me know if you do find out more about this topic.

Lumi-

I would suggest talking to your doctor first.  I know when I was in the hospital in March, when we figured out I have MM, that my neurologists was very stern about me not taking any "herbal" remedies, or taking any hormones (i.e. Birth control).  So, I asked if it was ok for me to take vitamins still, but I am slightly paranoid when it comes to my health.

I've heard that Gingko Biloba helps with memory, but I personally have not used/tried it (although, at times I do feel that I could use anything to help me with my memory!  Wink)  I take a number of prescription medication and the only non-prescription medications that my doctors have asked me to take are Baby Aspirin, Niacin (which I was told should also help to open the blood vessels and increase blood flow) and Ferrous Sulfate (Iron) for anemia.  The one thing that my pharmacist reminds me is that many vitamins and over-the-counter drugs do interact with prescibed medications, so it is important that I "space" out my medications when taking them.  I would seek the advice of your doctor, as well as pharmacist and/or a PDA if you have access to one.   Smiley

Regardin Natto?  Oh my...you'll need a nose plug before you go near it.  ;Grin  Natto is a fermented bean curd; although, I know I shouldn't knock it until I try it.  I love Japanese food, but this is one that I haven't been able to bring myself to even taste....I heard only good things about it though.  I've read that there is a "Natto" supplement which would probably be my choice if I ever decide to take it.  I think I'll ask my doctor at my next appointment about it.  Here is a website I found on Natto...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natto#Medical_benefits

"..Japanes often say that eating natto is good for your health. Some of these claims are backed by medical research. Natto for example contains a compound Pyrazine, which not only gives natto its distinct smell, but also reduces the likelihood of blood clotting. An enzyme nattokinase may also reduce blood clotting both by direct fibrinolysis of clots.."

Take care,
Shan
