Has Asprin/Cholesterol meds cause liver damage?
Aug 10th, 2005 at 12:17pm

I'm just wondering....as I know some of us are taking aspirin post-op if anyone has seen any changes with their liver tests due to taking aspirin or cholesterol medication?     Smiley

Can anti-epileptic medications (anyone taking Zonegran?) do this as well?

If anybody knows, please let me know...

Thank you.

Worried,

Shan -

I believe any medication you take on a routine basis has the potential to affect your liver.  That's my understanding...of course, I'm no doc!

Hi Shan.

I remember Dr Bernes telling me that the reason he was putting Cara on Trileptal was no need for regular blood checkups that would indicate if it was affecting the liver.  As it is a mild anti-seizure medication.  I know the other, stronger version of anti seizure medications require regular checking to be sure.

Im not sure about aspirin but I can look it up...google can help "side effects of aspirin".  I do know numerous of medications require regular checking too as my mom was doing so well on some pain medication that completely made her pain free in her hips but it was affecting her liver...so they took it off, the pain returned and the liver status stabilized...shes on something else for the hip pain.

Thanks Shari and Carol...

You're right....I was afraid that it may in fact actually be "other" medication that I'm taking as well....  Embarrassed  I've been searching on the internet, but I'll be on here for days looking up EACH medication I currently take.  Then again....I've got nothing but time since I haven't returned to work.  Here goes... (My gosh...what did we do before the internet?  Smiley)

I do weekly blood tests, and up to this point everything has been okay....but my recent SGPT (ALT) was a little abnormal. Sad

I also wanted to ask if anyone is taking Niacin????? Wow...it sure makes you warm inside!  Shocked

Thanks again...and enjoy yourselves in Vegas!  ;Grin

Take care,
Shan

HI:

Statins (cholesterol lowering meds) can affect your liver enzymes. Your doc should do routine bloodwork. If the enzymes are worrisome there is another prescription med that they use with folks who need to be off the statin. I believe it's called Zetia. So much of taking meds is about weighing the potential consequences. My husband has an abnormal liver panel related to taking lovastatin, I do not. We just watch it. We have the risk factors for heart attack that warrant the use of meds.

I know you are good at asking the right questions  Roll Eyes

I don't know about aspirin or cholesterol drugs, but some seizure meds can affect your liver.  I don't think Zonagran does, though -- I beleive that is metabolized in the kidneys.
