Strange association but...had to ask!
Aug 31st, 2005 at 8:07pm

This will sound very bizarre, but I was wondering if anyone has ever noticed an association of hiccups with TIAs.  I've had MM since 1985, and am now an adult, but have always noticed that I'm more apt to have a TIA following a bout of hiccups.  OR it could be that I'm about to have a TIA, and it's preceded by hiccups.  It never seems to be the actual hiccups that cause the TIA (i.e., it's not like there's a hyperventilation relationship).   Sorry, if that was a little confusing, lol!

Just wondering...

Any replies would be greatly appreciated

Renee

Renee,
I must say that I have never noticed a connection between hiccups and TIAs.  But, it is an interesting observation and if it happens commonly enough than it is probably not your imagination.  I am not sure what the physiological cause of hiccups is, but I would check it out to see why the two might connected!  Hope this helps and let us know what you find.
LOL and take care,

I just got back from Google...plugging in "Hiccups and TIA's"....didn't research that much but one source said theres a connection between stroke and hiccups but not enough information...so will probably look in the stroke websites.  Interesting connection though.  Smiley Carol

Interesting association.  There is probably something to it!

Your post makes me wonder .... the first time my daughter, Daphne, was ever hospitalized was after she had a bout of hiccups after feeding.  She afterwards fell "asleep" and would not respond to me.  By the time we got to the hospital, she was fine, and we never did figure out what it was.     Smiley   Maybe a TIA or seizure -- hard to tell with babies!

I found the association very interesting as well, and I got to thinking. This is just a wild guess, but what if an improper balance of something the brain needs, triggers the “hiccup” center part of the brain, similar to a seizure?? In other words, you know how the brain controls how the body moves by sending out signals to the nerves and muscles?  A seizure is when those normal signals are changed in some way, which we know MMD can cause. Could it be something similar to that; only instead of a seizure type of episode, harmless hiccups are triggered instead? Perhaps signals from that "hiccup center of the brain" are affected, and send impulses to the diaphragm.

I don’t know, but since the exact cause of hiccups are a mystery, it was just a thought… Smiley

YIKES!!!!!!!!!  Now you all have me worried because I had two bouts of hiccups yesterday.  Oh dear......I hope that I'm not going to have a TIA soon.  That is all I need.  At least I will be having a MRI/MRA on September 9th.  Smiley

Michelle,

I thought the same thing because I recently had the hiccups, and usually, I don't take much notice of it.... I do notice though that ever since being diagnosed with MM and having my surgery, I take notice to every little thing that seems out of the ordinary...(but never thought twice about the hiccups until now  Shocked).  Hope all goes well with your MRI/MRA on Sept 9...we'll keep you in our prayers for good results.   Wink

Take care,
Shan

Oh!!!!  I am sooooo sorry if I alarmed anyone!  That was not my intent at all!!!  It's only been my experience...and it's one that has followed me throughout childhood and now, even into adulthood!  I know that hiccups are very common in children...but this same association still occurs with me, as an adult.  Thanx for all the info though!

Hi Renee,

No problem! I can't see how you could ever alarm anyone. I think it was a very interesting observation and we're just throwing out some thoughts. Please feel free to discuss anything you want. I thnk after your body goes through what some have with MM, it's like several have said, you notice every detail and wonder if it's at all related. That's all.

Thank you for your post.. Smiley

I completely agree with Mar - don't worry about it, Renee!

You never know when bringing up something so simple will bring about a realized connection.  I was thinking about it when you posted, noting that my daughter Tara has ALWAYS had hiccups (even when I was pregnant, LOL!)  Her hiccups haven't seemed to coincide with her TIAs, and there have been 3 of them post-surgery.  It did make me wonder but then again, I have a history of having hiccups, too (no MM or TIAs, though).  Who knows, but I think it's worth thinking about!

As Mar said, never hesitate to discuss something that's on your mind . . .

Hugs from out west,
Jill

LOL    I have always had hiccups too.  More than usual!  ... and also felt Daphne having hiccups many times when I was pregnant with her.    With MM you do end up worrying over  and analyzing every little thing!!!

I agree with Jill and Mar.  Please don't worry about worrying us... it is good to throw your thoughts out there.  It is good to be able to share common concerns -- even if it's something  you haven't thought about for a llllooong time  Cheesy

Renee, check this out....  Kiss

Here is some interesting info from a study conducted that shows how stroke symptoms can be different btwn men and women.  Check out the possible symptoms!:

TRADITIONAL stroke symptoms:
sudden changes in sensation
walking ability
balance
motor functions (including paralysis of one side of the body)
speech
language abilities
facial muscles
vision
dizziness

NONTRADITIONAL symptoms:
headache
face pain and limb pain
disorientation
change in consciousness
various neurologic symptoms like HICCUPS, nausea and general weakness  chest pain
shortness of breath
palpitations

("The findings showed that overall, 28 percent of women reported nontraditional stroke symptoms, as opposed to 19 percent of men. Statistically significant sex differences were found for four specific symptom categories: men were more likely to report the traditional symptoms of imbalance and paralysis of one side of their body, while women were more likely to report nontraditional symptoms of pain and changes in consciousness or disorientation.")

Here is the site where I found this info:

Wow, Stephanie! Very interesting to see "hiccups" actually included as a nontraditional symptom ...thank you!  Shocked

See Renee...your innocent mind boggling question has brought "hiccups" to light in regards to its relationship with stroke!  ;Grin  I too tried looking up the relation between the two further and found some sites such as:

"Disease, infection, or stroke. You may get hiccups that are caused by a long-term medical problem."
