Mid Line Operation
Sep 27th, 2005 at 5:12pm

Hi Everyone,

I have had a chance to read all the topics lately.
Dane is 12 and has just undergone his second STA MCA on his left side last Friday.
We only had him home a week from having his right side done, he got a virus and had a TIA on his left side. We were hopefull that he would not need his left side done for a few years, but here we are two lweeks later and back in.

He is recovering well, but the left artery is quiet narrow and we are having another CAT scan today to check that it is still patent.

The surgeon and Hospital Staff at Dalcross, Sydney have been great.

My question is that the surgeon has advised that Dane will need a 3rd operation some time in the future on his Mid Line section. Has any member undergone this third proceedure and what has been the reasons explained to you?

Up to now we were only expecting to have the left and right STA MCA done.

Hello Dane:

When I had both my surgeries in 1989 and 1990, they told me I may need a third surgery in which the incision would be in the back of my head. I have asked my doctors now, as an adult and they tell me I will not need a 3rd surgery. I am not sure if this was the same type of surgery, but thought it may help to let you know I never had to have th 3rd surgery. If I remember correctly, I was only going to need one if the MM continued to progress after the first 2 surgeries.

I hope this helps some!

I have looked all over the web and cannot find any understandable info on a Mid Line surgery.  I can't tell if "mid line" is a direction or if it is a location within the brain.  That may help narrow the search.
I am sorry to hear of the scary struggles your family has been going through.  Good luck with everything and keep us updated on what you find out.
Take care, Stephanie

The back section of the brain, I beleive, is called the occipital section.  Here is a link to the various brain areas:

Does occipital surgery ring a bell?

Hi Peter, Deb and Dane,

I haven't heard of a possible "third" surgery in the "back of the brain" until Dewski's recent post about his son Michael whose doctor mentioned something about this to them.  (You may want to scroll through "Prayers for Dewski..").  However, this is the place to post your question  Wink I'm sure others can offer their personal experiences regarding this, or share what they have heard about it.  I look forward to reading the repsonses you receive too!  Cheesy

As always, I would recommend sending Dane's films to other MM specialists to get their opinions.  Until then, try not to worry (I know it's hard)..and continue to celebrate the progress he's making with his recovery from his 2 recent surgeries.

Good to hear that Dane is recovering well! ;Grin

Take care,
Shan

Hi,

Well, my doctors never called my extra surgeries on my left side "Mid Line" BUT, if what Stephanie came up with is the correct equal, than I had it.  I had an indirect surgery combined with a OA (occipital artery)-MCA surgery in April,  approximately 1 1/2 years after my initial STA-MCA.   The reason they did this was because the STA-MCA, while indeed providing BETTER blood flow than before, did not provide ENOUGH blood flow and the MM was continuing to progress.  The graft, from what I gather, was just not big enough.  Since they obviously couldn't do another STA-MCA they used the occipital artery this time.  So far so good but I must admit that this last surgery was EXTREMELY painful and much more difficult to recuperate from than the STA-MCA.  Sure thrilled there was another option though! ;Grin

I sure hope that Dane's test comes back well and he doesn't have to have another surgery.  But, at least know that even though it's frustrating when you all thought he was done with surgeries, there is something that can be done to remedy the situation.

Please excuse my writing tonight as I am working on very little sleep.  Smiley  You all are in my prayers and if it turns out that Dane does need the OA-MCA, and if you have more questions, please know that I'm more than happy to share my experience wih this.

Lisa:

Thank you for sharing that. That is exactly what the doctors told my parents at the time of my surgeries "might happen"....

Pter, Deb and Dane:

I hope and pray you will all be okay. Dane, I know you can get through this just fine. I will pray you don't have to have a 3rd surgery. I will be thinking of you often!
