Japanese Inventors Develop Gene Therapy

5 September 2005

By US Fed News

ALEXANDRIA, Va., Sept. 5 -- Ryuichi Morishita of Osaka, Japan, and Toshio Ogihara of Minoo, Japan, have developed a gene therapy for cerebrovascular disorders.

According to the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office: "By introducing hepatocyte growth factor gene and/or vascular endothelial growth factor gene into the subarachnoid space in humans, cerebrovascular disorders such as cerebrovascular obstruction, cerebral infarction, cerebral thrombosis, cerebral embolism, stroke, cerebral bleeding, moyamoya disease, cerebrovascular dementia, and Alzheimer's dementia can be effectively treated or prevented."

The inventors were issued U.S. Patent No. 6,936,594 on Aug. 30.

The patent has been assigned to AnGes MG Inc., Osaka.

The original application was filed on Sept. 18, 2000, and is available at: http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO2&Sect2=HITOFF&u=/netahtml/search-adv.htm&r=1672&f=G&l=50&d=PTXT&s1=ISYMD-20050830&p=34&OS=ISD/08/30/2005&RS=ISD/08/30/2005 .

Thank you, Michelle for sharing this info.  I'm printing it as we speak and taking it with me to my next dr.'s appt.  He does his best to keep up-to-date with this type of info.  He has a special interest in MM, especially because hes had a handful of MM patients for some years now.  One of his patients was only 9 yrs old when he had his surgery, and is now 20 and doing just fine!  ;Grin

Thanks, again.

Very interesting!!  After Daphne's latest tests, they took blood from her to study the level of a "growth factor".  They said they were looking into whether high levels of a specific growth factor could explain why some MM patients had good takes of grafts (like Daphne did) and why others did not.  Also the growth factor might explain the development of the collateral vessells.

It sounds like they were looking into the same type of thing discussed in the paper you posted.

Michelle,

Super info!  The marvels of modern medicine and technology.  I knew research scientist were on it. Even Dr. Suess on moyamoya said it would someday disappear. lol

Laying all jokes aside this is marvelous news for many and hope that someday moyamoya will be gone.

Thanks so much for sharing.

Love and Hugs,

Lore
