MM and Flu Vaccines
Oct 4th, 2005 at 8:08pm

Well, its about that time of year....the dreaded flu vaccine. Given that they don't want us taking the majority of over the counter cold/flu medicines, does anyone have any exerience to having flue shots with MM...before and after surgery (as I am still in ongoing-diagnosis phase).

Thanks,
Greg

Good question Greg! I was just in my doctor's office today and meant to ask him as I saw the flyers up all over the waiting room...however, due to my short-term memory, looks like I forgot.  Undecided  Let's see what other's post.  I have another appt tomorrow, so hopefully I remember to ask.... Having asthma, I'm also interested in whether pneumonia shots are also recommended for MM patients.

Take care,

My now two year old had his flu shot last year.  Because of his age they give it in two parts.  This was after his surgery, not quiet 6 months (less I think) post op.  He seemed fine after both doses of the flu shot.

Good luck.

The doctor said Tyler should always get the flu shot because of the asprin therapy. He got it last year and did fine. I would rather get it and not have to worry about him getting a fever and not being able to stop his asprin and having to worry about Reyes.

Dang MM can make a lot of things confusing!

Hi All!!!

Sorry I've been away on vacation for the last two weeks....so lots of postings to catch up on, lol!!!

I work in an Pediatric Emergency Department...and my job has always offered the flu shot every year.  I've received the injection for six years now...and never had any problems whatsoever (and never gotten the flu, lol!).

Kathleen has always gotten the flu shot since her diagnosis. Rena, like your son, Kathleen takes asprin and is under 17 this is one of the high risk groups.I have no worries about her gettting it because as I understand it you can not get the flu from the shot because it's not a live virus like the chicken pox vaccine is.By the way has your son had the CP vaccine? Kathleen did when she was younger but when she was in Kindergarden(about 5 months after surgery) there was a CP outbreak at her school. The first thing we did was check her for the imunity(which she should have had because she had the vaccine...)and she was not imune so I had to keep her out of school until it passed.About 60 children came down with CP,all of whom had had the vaccine. We didn't want to take her off the asprin(you can actually get CP from the vaccine) to vaccinate her because she was only 5 months out of surgery. We did revaccinate her last year and then checked to be sure it took.

Matthew has had a flu shot every year -- even immediately following his surgery (six years ago).

Matthew started aspirin therapy at the age of 7 -- and since the symptoms of Reye Syndrome are similar to the symptoms of a stroke -- I have made sure he has gotten one very year!  Then, right at his ninth birthday he lost his right kidney to a combination of MM and the docs inexperience.  This has assured him of receiving the flu shot for the rest of his life -- not just Reye Syndrome age.

A funny story to go with all this:
Remember last year how everyone was panicing and there were long lines to get the flu shot??  Matthew and I were waiting in one such line (it took about 2-3 hours).  Everyone in the line was a senior citizen except for us.  I had a little old lady call me over and say, "Does he really need it?  Because they won't give it to him unless he really needs it."   Wink  I just assured her that he did really need it and went back to my place in line.

Mary:  I wonder why I hear people say they don't want to take the flu shot because they don't want to get sick.  Smiley  That has always been my concern.  I had a co-worker that swears the shot makes her more sick than if she contracted the flu on her own.  hmmm...

Kim: Yes, I do remember the shortage last year.  It's funny about the older lady asking about whether Matthew really needed it, but it also made me a little disturbed, sorry. Lips Sealed  (sorry, just feeling a little protective..that's all)  That was very kind of you to explain to her that he in fact did need it. Wink

Renee:  Well, it's about time you got back!   Smiley  How was your cruise?  You need to PM me and let me know how it went.  I'm so envious...now get back to work!  hee hee  Glad you're back!

Holly's doctor said she had to have one.  In fact she gave the whole family one so we don't pass anything through the house.  Anyway, we got it yesterday, and my mom had a reaction to the shot and has felt horrible all day.

Hi.  I don't mean to stir anything up... I just wanted to chime in to the discussion.   I have no idea whether this is coincidental, or not, but Daphne had a very bad reaction to her first round of vaccines, and we will never give her any more vaccines again.

I "think" the problem she had was with the DPT shot, which can cause problems for people with seizures or other neurological disorders.   Of course, at the time Daphne got her DPT shot, she was a perfectly "normal" little baby with no indication of siezures or neurological problems.   After the shot, though, everything changed  Embarrassed (fever, inconsolability, loss of eye contact, seizure disorder within 10 days)

For a long time, Dr.s didn't know what was wrong with Daphne (why she had seizures, and why she was so severely delayed), so we always wondered about her vaccines.  Now we know she had MM disease, but she still seems to have had very severe issues, even way before she had any strokes.

The flu vaccine is probably a lot different from the round of vaccines they give to little babies, but I did just feel like I should share my experience.

I don't want to scare anyone, or cause any problems... but, Daphne will not be getting a flu shot - or any other shot - for a long time.  When/If she does, I will be sure to ask that she gets the vaccine in single dose vials, to be sure she does not get any potentially toxic preservatives (last I checked, the flu shot still had thimerisol/mercury)

Annica,

To Google I went and found this so far on Rheyes Syndrome... I don't know what/if there is any direct connection between MM and Rheyes syndrome.  Other than there may be some of us who have MM AND other medical issues such as Rheyes syndrome.  I don't think there is, but I could be wrong.  Smiley About the flu shot?  This topic is bringing this subject to light...as we are able to see how others feel about it and how their personal reactions may affect their decision on whether or not to have it.  Thanks, Greg, for starting this topic!  Wink

Take care,
Shan

Definitions of Reye's syndrome on the Web:

The connection isn't between MM and Reye's Syndrome it's the asprin.Taking asprin for a serious virus such as the flu or Chicken Pox puts a child at risk for Reye's Syndrome. That's the main reason Kathleen gets the flu shot.  She was also revacinated for the Chicken Pox.

Hi All.... Smiley

Wow, this has turned into a great set of posts.

Annica, the reason behind my original post was of concern. Given that there are so many over the counter cold and flu medications that the doctors do not want people with MM taking, I was wondering if this held tru for flu shots as well. Given the fact that I get VERY sick once per winter, I am trying to find new ways to protect myself.

In terms of Rheyes Syndrom, Rheyes is a potentially deadly illness that can occur in children with Chicken Pox who take asprin. Given that many of us on here take asprin on a daily bases, and some of us have small children with MM, it is only a natural transition within the same set of messages. I could be wrong, but I don't think there are any links between Rheyes and MM.

Just my 2 Smiley.

Regards,
Greg

I just wanted to say that the doctor did explain to me that Rheye's Sydrome is very rare, and if Tyler is to get a Fever for anything it is safer for him to continue his asprin rather than risk a stroke.

Of course we all know about rare medical problems. So Tyler will get the Flu shot and I will keep a close eye on him . However the flu shot doesn't prevent the stomach flu and it seems Tyler gets that every year. Since that is what pushed his MM over the edge I always get very scared for him during that time, since he dehydrates so easily. Last year the doctor admitted him so they could put an IV in him to keep him hydrated.

Does anyone else have the stomach flu to deal with every year?

Rena, Your right Reye's Syndrome is very rare but these statistics can be a little decieving because of the fact that children jsut don't take asprin anymore when they're sick.they don't The statistics aren't based on only children taking asprin just the # of cases.Of course the # of cases have come down since the warnings for children not to take asprin when they have a virus.YOur lucky that Ty had the Chicken Pox already, because it's not know how affective the vaccine is as in our case that 60 children had come down with them even though they had the shot.Kathleen's ahd some colds and low fevers and we haven't taken her off asprin, supposedly the risk is a SERIOUS viral infection like flu and chicken Pox.We just pray she stays healthy, becuase as you said we all know about rarity LOL and I'm definatly not a "gambler" when it comes to her health. We haven't had any stomach virus's thank god(i'm knocking on wood). She has vomited only once and it was at the Dr.'s office and her right away gave us a script for something to stop it but we never had to even fill it becuase she didn't vomit again. That would scare me though because of the dehydration. At least 2 of kathleen's strokes she was dehydrated and we didn't even know it!!

Will a flu shot still be effective (or even safe) if you've just had a bout with the flu?  If so, does anyone know if there should be a waiting period between having the flu and getting a shot?    I've been down and out with this darn thing for a week now and I don't want to go through this again anytime soon! Smiley

Thanks,
Lisa

Rena,

Daphne seems to get stomach viruses a lot.  I'm not sure why that is -- we actually seem to be dealing with a little tummy bug, right now (no throwing up, but lots of tummy pain and loose stools).

There are so many different types of stomach bugs out there -- not just the flu.  When Daphne was about 5 months old, she got rhotovirus and had diarreah, vomitting and a 103 degree fever  Sad    Daphne had been diagnosed with her seizure disorder about two months before this, and when I brougt her to the hospital, the doctors tried to say that her neurological issues were causing her tummy problems, and that the fever was from dehydration  Angry   I had to tell them that they should test her stool, and - yup - it was a nasty tummy bug.  Daphne did need IV fluids for a few days that time, but since then we haven't had any bugs where we felt like we couldn't keep her hydrated *knock on wood*

I received a flu shot last year with no side effects or ramifications.  I will also get one this year!  Lisa, you sound like you have had a terrible bout with the flu.  I would imagine the shot would help prevent most future flu bouts this year. Poor Daphne and her belly.  Cry

Hi Greg and Shan and everybody else!

Thank you for your answers and forgive me for beeing so awkward in my tone of voice. There is lots of valuable information and support on this board and for that I am greatful since there is NO INFO WHATSOEVER to find in Swedish. BUT sometimes I get so tired of worrying about Louise and having to be the one responsible for her health by seeking for info in a foreign language, trying to value and "weigh" all the facts. I am no doctor and certainly not in a foreign language! I just want to be a concerned and loving mother leaving the doctors job to the doctors, if you know what I mean?!. But every time I ask the doctors a question about mm and risks for Louises sake I feel they throw the question right back at me since they don´t have a clue most of the time. You recommend contact with a mm-specialist to all new members, well there aren´t any on this side of the Atlantic and certainly not in Sweden.
So every new info about this disease educates AND alarms me because I am unsure of how to value it.
Sorry about complaining, This group of people saved me from going insane and for that I love you so please forgive me for being this way. Cry

Take care,

Annica

Annica,

Please don't worry about letting your frustrations out.  We are here for you! Smiley And want to help in any way we can.

Quote:
"You recommend contact with a mm-specialist to all new members, well there aren´t any on this side of the Atlantic and certainly not in Sweden."

Are you able to mail copies of the films (MRI's, angio, etc) to MM specialists in the United States?  You can   call their offices and explain to them your situation and then send them your films, etc.  I am sure they will get back with you on their opinion(s), or you can always contact them.

I know that my neurosurgeon, Dr. Takanori Fukushima, was literally flown to Israeli to perform a life-saving brain surgery once from a family who desparately requested his medical expertise. (I'm trying to find the newspaper article...)  I know that this was an extreme case; however, he does travel the world and I believe frequents your area (which means he works closely with local area doctors who may be able to provide "translation" services).  His "overseas" professorships in your area include: honorary professor at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, the University of Frankfurt and the University of Marseille. Therefore, may I suggest you  contact his office and speak to his office manager for more information.  He is currently in Japan; however, you may want to inquire if/when he will be in/around your area.

Dr. Takanori Fukushima

Phone: (919) 239-0264
Fax: (919) 239-0266

I hope this helps, Annica.  Please keep your spirits up.  We're all here to help.  My opinion, once again, is to send Louise's info to MM specialists (even if they are located in the U.S.) for their opinion.  Smiley  I'm not sure what your financial situation is, but you may need to consider traveling to a MM specialist if there isn't one available in your area.  Monica, another MM family member, recently traveled from Germany to California for her surgery.  Wink  I too did not have any neurosurgeon that specialized in MM here in my state, so I had to travel across the Pacific Ocean, then across the continental United States to North Carolina...so I understand the feeling.  Although, I know that the language barrier also doesn't help the situation.  Just a thought...traveling to a MM specialist may be something you may want to consider.

Hang in there,
Shan
