AUSTRALIAN SURGEON
Oct 8th, 2005 at 5:18pm

Hi All

I am newly diagnosed - live on east coast of Australia and am wondering whether anyone knows of surgeons with bypass experience here ?

Also wondering - :

1 - how much care needed on return home from surgery?

2 - do most people return to work after surgery, and if so, after how long ?

Also - thank you to all - I have found this site invaluable during the last week.

Helene

I know that there are surgeons with experience in Australia -- but I don't no their name or location.

I had a friend (through the pediatric stroke network) whose daughter had the surgery about five years ago.
However, I haven't been a part of their digest for a few years now.  (Matthew has been doing that well  Cheesy)

I will see if I can get more specifics . . .

Hi Helene,
Further to my PM the other day I remembered that Dane on this website is from Newcastle and I think he has just had surgery.I also keep in touch with Emma who is from Melbourne and she had a STA-MCA done this year.

Here is what I was able to find out:

Surgery was performed in the Jan 2000 at Starship Hospital by Dr. Andrew Law following the procedures outlined by Dr. Scott.

My friend is actually from New Zealand.  I am assuming that Dr. Law is a pediatric Neurosurgeon.

Hi Helene,

Welcome to the MM.com family!  ;Grin I wanted to make 2 suggestions in answer to your question about a surgeon in Australia.  My first thought was to suggest that you
scroll through the List of Surgeons thread
to see if anybody has already posted anything about a surgeon in Australia...And, my next suggestion was to have you
click on the Member Map above, then use the drop down menu and click on Australia
.  That way, you can PM other members from Australia (such as Moira) and speak to them about surgeons in/close to your area.  Wink  I hope this helps.  If I think of anything else, I will be sure to let you know.

One thing, I'm sure you've already been told, is that MM specialists are few in numbers, so please be sure that the surgeon you do choose has specific MM knowlege and experience.  And...what I always recommend, is that although you may actually find a surgeon near/around your area, I would also suggest sending your films to other MM specialists for their review and opinion.  It doesn't hurt, and I've never heard of it costing anything (except for postage).  Of course, this is only my  Smiley.

Best of luck in finding a surgeon.  Please keep us updated on your progress.  And..again, welcome!

Take care,
Shan

p.s.  I am now about 4 1/2 months post-op and haven't returned to work.  I do have other medical issues that complicate things; thus, my emphasis on seeking advice from a MM specialist.  Espcially when other medical factors come in to play, it is important that your medical team (neurosurgeon, neurologist, etc) are  MM specialists/experts so that ALL things can be taken into consideration when making medical decisions.  Wink

Hi Helene,
I'm newly diagnosed as well, in Melbourne....
There are two surgeons I know of at the Royal Melbourne Hospital that have experience and particular interest with Moya Moya Disease.
Have you had any luck?

Great news, Helene!  Wow..that was fast!  As Emily previously asked, do you know more about the surgeries you will be having?

Best wishes to you throughout your surgeries...I know you'll do just fine!  When you're feeling better, don't forget to stop by and let us know how you're doing...Smiley

Take care,
Shan
