Electrical Stimulation...
Oct 12th, 2005 at 11:35am

I think I mentioned that Kathleen is doing electrical stimulation on her left hand and wrist. This is to try and get some funtional movement back.Over the summer we went to Albany Medical Center 2 mornings a week. When school started it was hard to find the time to fit it in.We finally did find a place closer to home and started again last week.It has been working so I didin't want to give it up but it's such a struggle to fit it in before school. After a few weeks of Elec. stim. She became 100% more aware of ehr elft hand, and after about 6 weeks she started to get a small amount of movement even in her wrist. This has actually motivated her school OT  to work more on her left hand too.Well yesterday at  the therapy the therapist said she would call our insurance and try and get them to rent a machine for home use!!!! This would be HUGE! We could do it more often and at our convenience I won't have to drag her out of the house at 7:45 in the morning and then straight to school.I'm praying that they say yes!!!! Kathleen doesn't mind this at all she's doing great with it in fact she laughs sometimes when she looks at ehr hand moving. She's getting a new AFO on her left leg and an SMO on her right now(like the AFO only shorter).Once she gets these I don't know if I'll be able to keep up with her LOL.

Mary Grace,
This is a fascinating and wonderful discovery for you and Kathleen, and possibly for many others left dibilitated by a stroke.  I am glad that you are seeing such amazing results from the therapy.  I will pray along with you that you can have a machine for your house.  Kudos to you for fighting for her and to Kathleen for being such a trooper! Good luck to you and I pray her progress continues!
Take care, Smiley

Nancy, it's been 3 1/2 yrs since her last stroke. She's had no functional movement since then. She can weight bear from elbow to shoulder, she's just starting to weight bear with a straight arm from hand to shoulder,The other thing that helps promote some hand movement is a massager to stimulate the muscles( for ex. on her plam to get her to close it, and on the back of her hand to get her to open it).The massagers that the therapsit have were quite large so what I found worked good was a soft electric toothbrush. She had started to get some movement in her fingers before the elec. Stim., but has never had any wrist movement. I may know tomorrow if the insurance will pay.I'm praying hard that they will, but I won't give up if they say no,I'll keep trying, maybe they'll just get sick of me asking LOL.

Mary,

It's always great to hear great inspiring news.  I'm so pleased to read that Kathleen is benefiting from the electrical stimulation.  I just had some nerve testing in my hands up to my elbow, and I personally thought those little shocks hurt.  Embarrassed I told you, I'm a big baby.  Wink  Anyway, I sure hope that your insurance realizes how Kathleen is benefiting from this electrical stimulation machine and will allow for her to have one conveniently located in your home.  Lore would be a good person to consult on this topic.  You're right...even if they deny you, press forward and don't give up.  Hey, make them some of your delicious homemade applesauce! hee hee Wink  No, seriously, as with anything else, don't let the insurance companies, etc. stand in your way of obtaining the BEST medical treatment that's out there for you, or in this case Kathleen.  Especially when you see the progress she's making!

Take care,
Shan

Shan, Your too funny, but hey if it would work, I'de make gallons of applesauce for them LOL. The electrical stim supposedly is just a "tingle".They can adjust the amount of stimulation and find what works and is aslo not painful. While adjusting it we could tell if it was too much for Kathleen she would act very uncomfortable. Thanks for your encouraging words!
