Vision Problems?
Oct 13th, 2005 at 10:50pm

Holly went to the Eye Doctor this afternoon because she was having some blurry vision the last couple of weeks.  He said her vision was 20/20.  He also said she is suffering from something called accomadative fatigue.  We are still trying to figure out exactly what that is.  My question to everyone here is, does anyone else have this problem?  If so I would love some feedback on it.  We are in the process of getting a referral to an eye therapist which is apparently the only thing that will help her (glasses won't).  I'm wondering if this is some how linked to MoyaMoya.  Does anyone know?

Would appreciate any info that anyone could give.

Thanks
Hillary

Hillary,

My brother was just recently diagnosed with moyamoya as you may or may not know.  He said he's also been having some vision problems.  Just says it feels like it's not as good as it was.  He actually doesn't have very good eyesight.  He had lazy eye while little and can only see shapes of things when he's not wearing glasses or contact lenses.  One eye is worse than the other.  He also had to wear a patch when he was little over one eye.  He also has a retina that could become detached real easily.

It could very well be related, but that is only my opinion.  I'm not a doctor....blah, blah, blah.  Smiley

Let me know what you find out.

Hillary~
I had long periods of time when my normally good vision was blurry. It came and went. Tried to correlate it with something but couldn't. Had it checked by two eye doctors who couldn't figure it out. It seems that it happens less frequently. I don't know if it was stroke related or mm related or even if I had it prior to mm realization. I sense that the bad vision days were a factor in healing after the strokes...the blurred (or just 'not right') vision prevented me from doing things, feeling confident about being places unless I knew then well, or could sit still, etc. I was ok when I was in familiar places (like home). Took me awhile to expand my territory. It's also tireing having blurred vision, tireing dealing with it and wondering about it. But then I'm almost half a century older than Holly and have been stroked!!!!!

I hope that Holly can zip thru this with knowledge, her vibrant youth, character, family love and community support.

Lots of Love,
LA

Hillary -

I have some vision problems that I thought were related to MM as well.  I've worn glasses since I was in 3rd grade, but I sometimes get, what was once described to me, as optic migraines.  Not a typical migraine as in a headache, but more of a blurred vision, or I described as a visual TIA, for a few minutes.  Anyway, my eye doctor has been doing field-of-vision tests for me every six months due to my history of stroke.  I know that Holly hasn't had a stroke...but just an FYI...

hey me too...... my first stroke was about 4 weeks ago.. but i've been having problems with what were described as "blurry-eyed migraines" for 6 years now..... often without the actual migraine....
doc's haven't decided/pin-pointed yet if they're related to MM yet (or if so they haven't let me know!!)

Oh yeah - There are some days when I can hardly see at all.

For me it affects the left side of my focus point- for example when I look at my mom I can only see the right side of her face.

Sometimes, it affects smaller areas of my vision.  But I know what you are talking about.

The doctors all seem to agree it is the lack of bloodflow to the area of my brain which controls that particular vision field.  Well they're pretty sure . . .

My daughter, Daphne is way more involved that most on this board (maybe even anyone on this board), so I hope sharing her experience doesn't scare anyone.    Just keep in mind that each case is different, and Daphne is VERY unique.

At any rate, she had "normal" vision as a newborn, and it seemed to detioriorate around the same time that she developed a seizure disorder at 3 months old.  She definitely had vision, but her tracking was not nearly as consistant.   At that time, we had her eyes checked thoroughly, and they appeared to be "normal".   When Daphne was about 8 months old, I noticed one of her eyes was getting "lazy", and her eyes just didn't look as bright.  We saw an opthamologist, who saw significant scarring on her right retina, and also optic atrophy (on both sides, but right much worse than left).  Over time, this seemed to worsen, and Daphne eventually lost almost all her vision in her right eye.

Daphne had two strokes in January of this year (at about 15 months old), and finally was diagnosed with MM disease.  She had her surgeries with Dr. Steinberg in March, and has done really well.

We noticed that Daphne's original angiogram report seemed to state that her right opthalmic artery was supplying blood to the left side of Daphne's brain (which was severely starved for blood, and which was 20% smaller than the right side) , and I came up with this theory that Daphne's body had rerouted blood away from her right eye, out of necessity, because the left side of Daphne's brain needed the blood more.

I mentioned this to Dr. Steinberg during our last visit at Stanford, and he thought the theory made sense.  He said there was no way of knowing for sure, and that in a normal brain it would be very unlikely that an artery would redirect blood in such a manner, but that in Daphne's case, it could very well happen.

Jenny

BTW -- Daphne has pretty decent vision in her left eye, and Dr. Steinberg thinks that if Daphne's visual detioration was due to lack of blood flow - since her surgery seems to have been a success - she should have no more visual loss  Smiley

I'm not so sure what Kathleen's vision is like. She's not verbal enough to tell me things like if htere's any blurring or if she isn't seeing htings "quite right".She ahs an eye exam every yer and they've said her vision is good but I do wonder if like others here she has any slight problems that me "come and go".Some things I do notice that may point to this are....sometimes she leans way down to see what she's looking at,we've always kind of chalked this up to her being tired and just not sitting up straight,She tends to read and spell some things wrong that we know she knows...ie.and-adn ,the-teh,cat-act,etc.She's also gotten words mixed up with other words with similar letters in it(not sure if this is confusion or eye sight, she tires very easily( when I don't wear my reading glasses I am exhausted after reading something,it's not all the time so it may be hard to tell through a vision exam. Her reaction to a temporary vision problem may be her avoidance to do the work at times and I never want to confuse a  physical problem with a behavior problem she's a very cooperative litle girl given her circumstances I don't want to ever cause her fustration.I'm trying very hard to put all the pieces together becasue this year is a tri annual evaluation and it's a good time to bring up any adjustments to ehr IEP.Anyone have any ideas about what to ask when we go for her vision test in Jan.or what else to watch for ,or if we should be doing some other type of  vision screening???This is all so interesting and enlightening to read your posts. One other thing, when Kathleen was about 3 her left eye started to turn in and she wore glasses for a while,I have no idea if this was a very early sign or not....

I had my eyes checked a couple of weeks ago.  My left eye needed more correction than my right eye.  My left eye also has optical aouras (sp?) - they are migraines without the pain according to my opthamologist.  I've also noticed that when I have headaches, my eyesight is blurry.  I got new glasses today, and my left eye was tired by the end of the day because of the stronger correction.  I'll give it a couple of weeks and then change it if I need to.  Hope this helps.  Lee

Hello everyone~
In 55 and have been practically/legally blind in my left eye all my life. My closed caroted is also on my left side. I have suspected (since I had my surgery with Steinberg -- about 5ish yrs ago) that mm and all it's related phenomina, somehow correlate with my undeveloped retina. I appreciate the notions regarding this blindness that have been posted. It's one of the first things that makes sense to me. When I discussed it with Steinberg many years ago the correlation was very speculative. It's nice to share and be able to help/receive experiences with others. I too had horrible migrains all thru my youth. Now I too get the 'visual migrains'  not auras but just being way off visually. It's lessened lately but it kept me close to home (being out and about was too difficult with such odd vision) and baffled. Now I realize what it is am am more able to cope.

Thanks for sharing,
I too loved the tv show...lthank you...love to you all.

Tylers vision had always tested normal, but a year before his strok his left eye started turning in. The eye doctor said it was a combination of his CP and being far sighted. He went on th explain that since Tyler had CP the muscles in his eye were weak and and when they tried to compensate for the farsightedness it made his eye turn in.

I just find it weird that Tyler got his glasses and hearing aids the year before his stroke.

My brother, Gregory, also lost a lot of  his vision after his two moya moya strokes and the last attack which cost him most of his vision and memory.  After he went to Sick Kids' Hospital, Toronto in 1995, he has recovered quite a bit ever since - more than the doctors expected.  Now though, he has been having mood swing and agressive behaviour, that doctor Steinberg's team suggested might be due to insufficient blood flow to the brain.

But his physical health has really improved - mobility and coordination of the limbs after the stroke and he recognises us.

Take care, +

Maria.
