Flu Shots
Oct 18th, 2005 at 12:31pm

Does anyone know if moyamoya patients fall in the high risk category in the assessment that the CDC does for flu shots?  I am looking at the questionnaire and wonder if we fall under the category for having a chronic metabolic disease ie. kidneys, blood or diabetes or if we fall under a condition that compromises repiratory function?  Just trying to find out if I can get the shot now or have to wait until after October 24th.

Hi Michelle,

The first time I was offered a flu jab was when I was in my first year at university. I was just asked if I wanted one - I didn't know until then that I was entitled to one. I still get flu jabs now even though I've graduated. When I call up to book an appointment for the jab, I do get questioned as to why I need it but as soon as I say "two lots of brainsurgery," there's never any more need to expand!

In answer to your question, I don't think we fall into the usual categories for people entitled to the flu jab but mentioning the surgery has allowed me to have the flu jab for the past five years. I've never asked why I'm entitled to one but am more than happy to accept it. I guess there's no harm in stating the fact that we've had the surgery.

Hope you get your flu jab (if you want it before October 24th, that is).

Regards,

Roz

Hi Michelle,

I just wanted to say that I got my flu shot yesterday.  I asked my internist if he recommends his moyamoya patients get the flu shot, and his immediate reaction was "do you have asthma? or any other respiratory disease?"  Being that I have asthma, he recommended I receive the flu shot.  I told him that I wanted to wait, but he said that it takes a few weeks for it to get into your system, and since we're coming up on the flu season, he recommended I get it then.

Knock on wood that I don't feel any side effects from it, which was my greatest fear/hesitation for getting the vaccine.  I did have to sign a waiver that I was made aware that I could get body aches, fever, etc..  Embarrassed

So, to answer to your question, I'm not sure if it was me having moyamoya that convinced him that I should take the shot, but maybe more because of my asthma.... Smiley

Take care,
Shan

Hi!,
I was given a prescription for a flu shot last year.  However, that was prior to my surgeries, but right after my diagnosis.  I was also about to start my student teaching semester and was going to be in a middle school all day.  All of my doctors were over-reacting to everything!  I will ask to get one again this year and I do not foresee a problem.  Good luck!

I'm not sure if we're considered "high-risk" but my doctor suggested I take the flu shot in the event that I get sick and cough or sneeze too much.  (He's afraid that it might cause another bleed.)  Well, that my  Smiley.  Hope it helps  Cheesy.
