Mikeman made it to school!
Nov 4th, 2005 at 10:16pm

Smiley  The school bus came.  WE'RE NOT WORTHY!!!!  Hehehe

Mikeman made it back to school on November 1st.  He got some really nice cards from the kids in his Special Ed class, as well as teachers - even got one from the dish washer in the cafeteria!   Smiley

He is very happy to be back in school and to get back into his routine of things.

His neurologist has increased his siezure medication one more time since we have been back from Boston.  He had one bad day, with a series of 30 partial complex seizures in one day.

He also had a few days of "simple" seizures...  His eyes would stare in a downward direction for literally seconds, and then he was came right out of it - not tired, not confused, nothing.  Out of the three kinds, we're very happy with those if we need to have any at all!  Hehehehe

He's more easily irritated but his neuro said that it is most likely one of the side effects of his medication.  It's odd to have Mikeman grumpy but again, if the medicine is helping so that he doesn't have to fight with these seizures all the time - then Mikeman can be grumpy!  LOL

Can someone give me an approximation on how long it has taken them to see improvements in the way they felt or how long before you felt "different" after your surgery?

Take care,

Hi Dewski,

I've been wondering how you all were doing . . . haven't seen you here in a bit!

That's wonderful to hear that Mikeman returned to school!  Anything coming close to some semblance of  "normalcy" is great for all of you! Smiley

I believe the answer to your question will be different for each person who may respond.  In my daughter's case, she felt "good" very quickly following her surgeries.  BUT, the fatigue factor took several months to fully diminish.  My recollection is that it took her close to a year before she had energy back to the level she was used to.  Remember - each patient starts at a different place, with a different set of circumstances.  Mikeman may surprise you . . . you never know!  (I'm with you, though, grumpy is just fine when you consider the alternatives!!!)

I'm glad to hear things are looking up, and will continue to keep you guys in my prayers.

Hugs from out west,
Jill

Dewski... Smiley

How are you? I PM'd you because I was wondering how the Mikeman was doing...and I'm so happy to hear that he returned to school! ;Grin  Yeah for Michael!  Hey...he's going "somewhere else!"  Wow, it doesn't seem like his surgery was that very long ago! (mid-Sept right?) Smiley

As you know, everyone's situation is different, but for me, looks like it took me a little longer than others that I've read about to return to work.  I am now 5 months post-op and am only returning to work now.  I still have headaches every now and then...and my right side of my face still has a "tight" feeling. Nonethessless, I am making progress...one day at a time.  Wink

Well Dewski, it seems like only yesterday that Mikeman was in Boston, and look at him now!...boarding the bus and going to school!  Children are amazing!  ;Grin

Thank you for making my day!  So good to hear from you, buddy.

Take care,
Shan

Dewski.

Mikeman returning to school is awesome Smiley That in itself is a major milestone for Mikeman.

As far as how long it takes to get back to some normalcy? Well, that is very individualized. I know Kevin is still back and forth six months post op. However, I see improvement everyday. Just the fact Mikeman is going to school is a giant leap. I'm sooo glad you were able to get the seizures under control. Grumpy is okay as Jill said when you consider the alternatives.

Mikeman is such an inspiration as he has been through it all. He has overcome so much adversity that I see him continuing to improve everyday. Remember, he is also the Mystery Man. I believe Mikeman will surprise you with his progress in a positive way. Especially since he is back at school and back to a familiar routine. Mikeman never ceases to amaze me how he comes through all his MM experiences and just keep going like the Energizer Bunny!

Good news all the way around. Keep us posted on Mikeman.

Hugs,

Lore Smiley

;Grin   Great news for mikeman!
I've never met him but as an out of work Special ed teacher I like him already.  Moya Moya saw to an unwanted early retirement (I really miss those kids) Sad

Give Mikeman my best and if you ever have any question about his schooling don't hesitate to call me Cheesy

God Bless,   Tom G.

;Grin Smiles all around for Mikeman!  ;Grin  Way to go!  ;Grin

As for your question, Dewski, as everyone already said, it's an individualized factor.  After my surgeries I was out of work for 5 weeks due to my needing to get started with speech and occupational therapy before I went back to work.  Once I started back, I worked half days because, boy, was I tuckered out!  But amazingly, getting back to work is what I needed!  Before I went back I would sit at home alone during the day (at the time, I was staying with my parents) with no one to talk to - no stimulation.  Once I started work again, and I was put in a situation where I had to interact with people more often, I started progressing and building up my stamina much faster than when I was home.  There's something to be said about a normal routine!

In terms of feeling "different" as the result of surgery....well...I know doctors say it isn't possible, but I felt different almost immediately after my second surgery (reminder that I had indirect).  Just my  Smiley.

Hi Dewski,
It is so great to hear Mike is back at school. I have been following his progress over the months and am really happy to see it's all starting to work for you all.

When I had my first bypass I was probably returning back to normal within 6 weeks - I was lucky I never was affected by the tiredness. I work from home for myself doing calligraphy for weddings etc.. and I had to tie up a wedding a week after I returned home and that was extremely difficult, as my mind couldn't process letters or words at that time and I was very emotional for a while too, but I can say probably within 2 months I was functioning ok. But that was for me - everyone is different. I was back having my 2nd bypass 6 months later and that was a quicker recovery period although the headaches were the killer with that one!!!
That was now 4 years ago and I have a totally new lease on life!! I lead a very active life and chase round 2 kids every day - my oldest is a special needs child but my 2 year old gets into everything!!

Give your Mikeman a big "High-5" from Australia for me
Warmly
Moira Smiley

Dewski,That's such great news! I've been wondering how things were going. I have a question for you.How do you know that the "staring" is a seizure? I've been tlaking with school and they tell me how Kathleen will just"zone out" at times.I really ahven't seen this at home but then again it's such a different atmosphere, there's really no stress.I would ahte to be missing something but I also don't want to jump to any conclusions.I'm going to be going in to school to do some observing (it's about that time that I check up on her program). At school they see that she will just lose ehr concentration and they can't always get ehr back.I don't want them to be "pushing and pushing ehr if it's physical as apposed to behaviorial(I really don't think it's behavior kathleen has always been so motivated and willing to learn).
Again it's great to hear such good news it really made my day!!!! Keep us posted!

I was misdiagnosed with MM in March of 2005. In January 2006, I was told it is not MM, but rather a massive restriction in the MC1 segment of my left carotid artery.
