Hi Smiley MM Family have not posted on site for ages!!! as last time I posted a coment, was waiting an appt at revasculation clinic at Great Ormond Street Childrens Hospital which finally happened last week!!!!!

Lydia's tia's have increased since her local consultant took her off asprin. She has also fallen even further behind in school work.

The clinic advised that MRI scan in 2002 and MRI scan 2004 showed no further damage and that she was stable, however her clinical condition i.e increased tias and cognitive deteriation were of concern and thus they felt she was a candidate for surgery.
They have asked me to discuss this with my local consultant,I have decided to go for the surgery, and so they want to see Lydia up in London in December. The surgeon will be a Mr Thompson and he has successfully carried out 80 such operations.

Lydia was upset at first about surgery but has now decided she would like the chance to feel a little better and struggle less in school and in her words" get lots of get well presents" Smiley

The clinic was not aware of my consultants claims(which I had typed on a prev post) that the calcium channel blocker she is subscribed slows down the aterial narrowing process but stated that Flunarazine is mainly beneficial  in relieving headache .

Will post again after Dec visit.

ps..is there much risk of blood loss during surgery and is blood transfusion ever required(on looking at info on surgery I would not have thought so Smiley??

Hi Louise,
I'm new here but good to hear you're going for surgery, I've got mine next week and am looking forward to the increase blood supply!
I'm 23 and was told by my doctors that there is the risk of blood loss during the procedure, but at my age the chances of needing a transfusion is very very low.... this is more a risk with elderly patients... sounds like lydia is quite young so i'm sure you'll be fine.
Good luck.

FYI....I did require a transfusion after my second surgery (I was 28 at the time of both surgeries).  I haven't heard of many of this board requiring the same, though!

Hi..welcome back!  I was pleased to read that Lydia is feeling a little better about having surgery.  I had a double STA-MCA and an indirect (at the same time) in May of this year, and I truly feel that my surgery has been instrumental in me feeling a lot better!!!   Recent MRI/MRA has shown no new TIA's since my surgery!  Wink  I will admit though, that I have had headaches...and I am still healing.

I didn't need any transfusions during my surgery; however, now when I need to do other procedures, (i.e. biopsy) they are concerned with bleeding issues and the topic of blood transfusions have been brought up.  So far, with my last biopsy, I didn't have any excessive bleeding!  Thank God!Please keep us informed on Lydia's progress... We'll keep you both in our thoughts and prayers....

Take care,
Shan
