BURR HOLES
Nov 25th, 2005 at 3:05am

Hi All

I was diagnosed in September, admitted to hospital on 20th October, and 5 weeks later, have now returned home. I had STA-MCA bypasses on both sides - (ops two weeks apart).

I had a third operation one week after the second bypass - this op placed 4 burr holes in the top of my skull - this is so that the scalp veins will eventually grow and supply blood to the top of my brain.

Has anyone else had this done ?

Just curious !

Helene

wow, this blows me away! i had ONE surgery a week and a half ago and i could not imagine having ANOTHER one in a few days.... my whole entire brain is swollen, that'd be intense...
and i didn't know they sometimes did Burr Holes as well as DIRECT bypasses?? I thought the point of the direct bypass was to move the superficial temporal artery UNDER ther skull as the blood supply.... why the burr holes to move more of the scalps blood supply??? very confused...
can someone please explain?

My son Dane is having this proceedure done tommorrow.
He has already undergone the two STA MCA proceedures, the right in August and the left in Sept.

It has been explained that the burr holes will over time allow the veins to grow down through them and connect with the mid line section of the brain. We have been informed that this is a technique to provide this section of the brain with additional blood supply and as both Danes corotid arteries are blocked, every extra supply path is appreciated.
