Precautions about the dentist....
Jan 8th, 2006 at 12:44am

I'm about to visit the dentist for the first time since my surgery, and I'm just wondering if there is anything I should be concerned with.  I already really dislike going to the dentist as it is, but after being diagnosed with moyamoya and my double bypass surgery last May, I'm wondering if there are any special precautions I should be concerned with.  I already have to take antibiotics an hour before my appointment, but is there anything else I should ask? be prepared for?

Could any of you shed some light on this subject with me, please?  Smiley Undecided

Thank you....

Shan

It has been 13 years since I've been diagnosed with Moya-Moya.  I've been to the dentist numerous times including getting braces.  I don't think there's anything to worry about but do mention if you're on any blood thinning medications just in case.  Hope it goes well!  Smiley

I agree with boarder06 - mention you are on blood thinners...just to be safe.

I had posted something a little while ago about local anesthetics at the dentist.  My dentist said if he needed to use a local anesthetic (fillings, etc) he would use one without epinephrine.  Those with epinephrine can cause blood vessels to constrict.  May not be a bad idea to contact your surgeon.

Hi Shan,

I have a problem with Beta Blockers and they are in the dental anaesthetics. He had to find other pain killing meds for me because of this.
I had to tell my dentist I was on aspirin at the time (when I had my ops - no longer need to take aspirin) and when he cleaned my teeth they BLED!! So be prepared for this!!

Good luck!!

Thank you boarder, Shari and my dear friend, Moira  ;Grin!  I appreciate your replies!...especially because my neuro just increased my daily aspirin intake.  I will definitely mention this...

I will also remember to bring up the issue about epinephrine.  I think I'm going to take your advice, Shari, and call my neurosurgeon's office tomorrow to ask him if there's anything else of importance he feels I should mention...just in case.  Wink

Thanks!  Smiley to you all!

Aloha,
Shan

Shan-

Since my surgeries I have been to the dentist many times for cleanings and fillings. I also got my wisdom teeth removed after my MM surgery. I just let the dentist know what my situation was and they personally contacted my MM doctors to find everything out they needed. I would just let them know about MM and im sure everything will be fine.

I had a tooth extracted and my dentist spoke with a
heart surgeon first, then ho suggested that I still take my plavix but no asprin.  I really didn't have ant excess bnleeding either. But definately tell your dentist about  any blood thinning   medications.       Good Luck!

I still get a lot of bleeding   with  getting cleanings  though.
