Hi Desdemona,

Welcome to our MM family. I too live in PA, NE of Philly. I would be happy to answer any questions if I can, but first I have to start by saying that it’s different for every person with MM. The symptoms or answers are not always the same for everyone. Too many various factors involved, so it’s different with each individual case. Any associated problems could also complicate the management of the disease.

I can’t say that I’ve ever heard of chest pain being in common with MMD, but you could very well have additional problems that need to be addressed, and they may not necessarily be associated with MMD itself. I’d have say that headaches are common with MMD though, but again, different for each person. Has your teenager had surgery to manage the MM and headaches? Different medications would be best suited for different situations, so it’s hard to say which would best suit your teenager. When we see someone not getting a specific concern addressed, we always advise a second opinion with a doctor who has experience treating MMD. Many doctors unfortunately do not have enough experience, especially if there’s associated problems.

I’m sorry I can’t give you a definitive answer to your questions, but seeking the advise from a MM expert is the best advice I can give.

Any further questions or if we can be of any help in any way, please feel free to ask. There is a wonderful group of people here who will be there for you.

You’re in my thoughts and prayers.

Mar

Welcome Desdemona,

I ditto what Mar said.

I personally have never heard of chest pain associated with MMD. Again, as Mar mentioned, it is different for everyone. I'm not a doctor but in my opinion, it appears the chest pain is a separate issue.

If your teenager is experiencing pain that is not managed, you may want to contact Dr. Steinberg at Stanford University who is a MM specialist. He will provide his opinion free of charge. His information is on the board under the link to Stanford University. As Mar mentioned in her post, when symptoms continue and medical management isn't working, we suggest getting a second opinion from a MM specialist.

Has your teenager had surgery as a result of MM?

I hope this is of some help to you. We are here to support you and answer any questions the best we can.

You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Hi Desdemona,
I too, have not heard of chest pain being linked to MM.
I had STA-MCA surgery to both sides in 2001 and have experienced headaches on and off since then. They have actually settled down again in the last couple of months but I have been prescribed Oxycodone and Digesics for them. Here in Australia the Oxycodone is a controlled drug as it is classed as an opiate and therefore highly addictive so you may not want to have such heavy duty pain killers, but with me they are the only thing that works when I do experience a headache.

hey there!

i have enquired about chest pain +- mm, mainly as i was wondering if mm could occur in the major heart arteries also... apparently it hasn't been seen [much??] but logically it's feasible...
i was particularly concerned as there is a HUGE occurence of serious heart disease/heart attacks in my family and i too had experienced some heart palpitations....

basically my surgeon said he'd like to get a cardiologist on board to monitor things.. but he did say that a palpitation wasn't a sympton, but that CHEST PAIN was (similay to angina)..

so yeah i'd get it checked just to be on the safe side!

Hi Desdemona,

I agree with your dr about getting a cardiologist on board.  I have one myself.  In fact, before I had my emergency double bypass last year for MM, I had to do a test on my heart to make sure that my heart could withstand the surgery.  I also had an adenosine test done after my surgery.  I think for precautionary measures, it wouldn't be a bad idea.  I'm all for obtaining opinions when in doubt.

Even if (and we pray it isn't) it's nothing at all, it's better to be safe.

p.s.  To answer your question, nothing was ever mentioned about the link between my heart and MM; however, they may do further testing on your teenager regarding her blood and if it clots easily, etc.  I recently had a aggregated platelet count.  As you know, MM patients are more prone to stroke, so the dr.'s usually have us on an aspirin regimine to prevent clotting. However, I've read that sometimes MM patients eventually stop taking aspirin.  As Mar mentioned, everyone is different.

Take care,
Shan
