Sleepiness
Jan 27th, 2006 at 8:10pm

I'm forever asking questions on something I'm not sure about... Smiley  Just another one of my "dumb" questions.  Is it just me or has anyone else suffer from extreme sleepiness (more like excessive yawning).  I've pretty much been the sleepy type, since being released from the hospital, I've noticed that I'm constantly yawning.  I understand that people yawn because they lack oxygen to the brain.  I just yawn all day long and start to doze as the day wears on.  I'm just curious if it's only me Smiley Smiley
Jus sleepy ole me,

Jan

Hi, Jan.  I can only tell you what I observe in my own daughter, since she's the one with Moyamoya (Daphne's two years old, and had surgeries last March).   I know that she sleeps a lot more than other children her age, and whenever I go places with her, people are always saying "Awww, she looks so tired."

I also notice that she sleeps more on rainy and cloudy days (I'm more tired on those days, too!), and I notice that following her surgeries - slllowwly - she does seem to sleep less during the day, and more at night (hallelujah!).   For a few months after her surgeries she was sleeping so much.  I did wonder if it was a "growth" thing, maybe new blood vessells were growing into her brain Smiley

Outside, in really bright sunlight or cold weather, she has always just "shut down".  Within a few minutes of being outside, she'll fall asleep but wake up as soon as we're inside again.

I have no idea what, if any of this, is related to her moyamoya.  It does seem like I've read on this board that other Moyamoya children get more tired than "normal" kids, and that some days are better than others.

I don't know about sleepiness. At school I've noticed that I always yawn during 1st period, which is expected, but I also yawn alot during other classes later in the afternoon as well. I don't see any of my peer as tired as I feel. I get a good amount of sleep at night too, usually about 7-8 hours.

Sad  Hi Jan,  No you're not the only one.
My family gets mad at me because I can fall asleep at any time. Jan,  all I need to fall asleep during the day is permission and yes I do yawn alot and when I yawn my left srm shakes.  Does that happen to you too? Smiley

I've been this way since my stroke in 2002 and I don't feel any better or worse since my surgery.

Roll Eyes Oh well things could be worse.

     Take care,     Tom G.

Hello,

Just noticed this post re sleepiness. My litle girl Lydia ( who Doctors now think may have had MM since very young) was extremly sleepy as a baby, would sleep for hours and hours. Even now she is yawning all the time, struggles to get up in the mornings. At school she gets very tired and teacher has to take her out into fresh air to wake her up. I think this has to be related to the lack of oxygen. Where due to visit MM consultant soon for pre op assessment and I will add this q to my ever increasing list of q that I take with me on hosp appts!!!

Thank you everyone!!!  I know I'm always asking weird questions, but I'm not sure if I'm the only one going through some weird stuff that never happened before my stroke.  I get approximately 7-1/2 to 8 hours of sleep at night and I can sleep a couple of hours during he day and still go to bed at a regular time and fall asleep easily.  Just was wondering...
Thanks for the support!!

Aloha, Smiley
Jan

P.S.  Jenny....Daphne is such a doll.  She's a beautiful little girl!!

Emily,
Same with Mandy 10 to 12 every night or the next day at least a two hour nap thats the minimum. She is a sleeping machine but they say the brain heals while ya sleep. I'm thinkin Mandy should be a female Einstein by now with no sign of strokes haha! She has a low physical tolorence also she tires easily during activities.

I had to laugh when I read these posts.  Just because we were teasing my daughter Jessica for being a champion sleeper.  She goes to bed about midnight, and sleeps at least until noon or 1 p.m. every day.  Whenever she wakes up at 11:00 or earlier, we joke about her needing a nap.  I'm sure part of this is due to all the anti-seizure meds she takes, but some of it was present pre-stroke and pre-diagnosis.  When she was in high school, even though she was an excellent student and had always loved school, it was a battle royal every morning to get her out of bed, and one semester she had to drop her first period class because we just couldn't get her there.  She was 16 at the time, and didn't have her first stroke until 19.  I still feel guilty, sometimes, about how hard I was on her for not getting up those mornings.  At some level, I think I knew something was wrong, just no one could put a definite finger on it, so they blamed it on teenage laziness.  I should have listened more to my heart, I think.

One of the most important things to help Kathleen have a "good" day is SLEEP.She needs 11-12 hours a night. If we slack on this  she has a really hard time at school. She works extremely hard both mentally and physically and by 12 she can be exhausted. She has PT,OT speech,Gym,and of course all the school work on top of this ,Oh yeah and she has a short walk to and from all of these special services too.I feel like a broken record sometimes when they tell me she had a hard time with things they thought she knew, or they just couldn't get her to cooperate or get motivated I'm constantly reminding them that she was probably exhausted, and there's nothing we can do to change it you just have to take what you can get.

hey don't be hard on yourself jessi's mom, i personally often feel lazy for the amount of sleep i get/need every night, while everyone else in my household is out by 7am! and i don't crawl out of bed till 10/11....
but oh well.. if i get a full night's sleep i feel awesome.. so you can't really complain..
hopefully by the end of all the surgeries it will be MUCH easier to push blood around my brain&body and then i'll be able to manage BOTH a social life and normal work hours
(for now the social life is going just FINE  Wink ;Grin hehe)
