MM Surgery Sked with Dr. Steinberg
Feb 1st, 2006 at 9:12pm

Hi Gang!

Long time no post!  I sent my films to Dr. Steinberg last week and I received word today.  I have a "rare form" of MM.  It is Moyamoya variance - it's related to MM but is not classic MM.  The surgery is the same as MM Bypass surgery.  Dr. Steinberg would like to do the surgery around 3/8 for the left side then the right side in April.  He's concerned that I had my 1st episode on 5/31/05 and all I'm taking is aspirin & depakote for headaches.  No wonder I felt like a timebomb!  He isn't comfortable referring me to another surgeon!

I have a couple of questions:  I know we should plan on staying up in Stanford for about a week.  Will I feel like flying back to San Diego afterwards or should we drive or ride the train?  What are some of the side-effects after surgery?  What is the procedure done in surgery?
Is there alot of pain after surgery?  Okay there were 4 questions.  Thanks for everything - don't know what I'd do without this site!  God bless, Lee.  Wink

Hi lsuvia,

Wow, it's been a while!  Welcome back!  Cheesy  I'm so glad to hear that you've been assertive and following up with your symptoms with Dr. Steinberg.  As you know, there are many "strains"/forms/types of MM.  I was told that the "mainland" form of MM differs from that of the Korean and Japanese MM.  Nonethess, MM is MM, and we still need to raise awareness of this "rare" disease.

Whatever form you have, you are in great hands.  I am not a patient of Dr. Steinberg, but I'm sure one of his patients will respond to your post.  You can also read through previous threads to see how their visit went.  As you know, every situation/case is different, so the length of time, restrictions pre and post surgery, etc. may also be different.  I am sure that you will be greeted by the hostess with mostess...Jill (gotchlorine).  I keep reading about how she, Tara and their family are great when it comes to meeting patients and welcoming them to Stanford, providing support, etc.  Smiley  It is especially appreciated when you are away from home...

Please know that we'll be here to support you as well.  Ask any other questions you may have.  You'll be in our  Smiley's, thoughts and prayers...

Take care,
Shan

Hi Shan,
Thanks for responding quickly.  I will let you all know what the name of the "rare form" is as soon as I find out.  Although we live in California, we are at the complete opposite end (just north of San Diego)!  It looks like we'll be in Stanford on Mon&Tue for tests and then surgery on Wed.  According to Teresa, the surgery will take about 6 hours.  She also said to plan on staying in the hospital for 4 days post-op.  We have to do the same thing in
APRIL
for the other side.  Cry
I'll review the previous experiences just to get a handle on what can/can't happen.  I'll be sure to let everyone know for sure when the date is going to be.  It sure is nice to know that we aren't alone in this journey!  The haircut thing sort of worries me...vanity!  Oh well, thank God it grows back!  talk to you soon.  Lee (aka lsuvia)  Wink

Hi Lee,

Yes, it's good to see you back, and I'm VERY glad you've pursued treatment with your MM (albeit a variance!).

Your questions are good ones, but unfortunately much is individualized, as things can be different from person to person.  As far as traveling, I think either flying or driving is do-able, but unless you plan to rent a car, it might be a good idea to drive so transportation isn't an issue while you're here.  There is a current surgery patient from the Los Angeles area, who drove home with her parents following her first surgery.  She returns in a few weeks for her second.  You might want to talk with them about their traveling experience.  Her mom's screen name here is "tingxindan".  After surgery, side effects can be varied.  They may include headache, blurred vision, nausea - it depends on a myriad of things, like a patient's tolerance to anesthesia, etc.  Dr. Steinberg usually does direct bypasses on adult patients.  There is alot of information here on this site about this surgery under Medical Info.  Pain:  This also differs from patient to patient.  My daughter's pain was minimal after each of her surgeries, but I've definitely seen a range of this, as well.

Sorry to not be more specific, but I wouldn't want to create false expectations or mislead you in any way.  What's important is that you're taking care of the problem.  You'll be in great hands - Dr. Steinberg and the staff at Stanford are wonderful, and as I've said before, their experience and expertise are unmatched.  I know the prospect of surgery is frightening but, like you said, one really does feel like a timebomb after coming to understand the condition.  I have complete faith that all will be well with you!

We would love to be of support to you and your family before you come and while you are here.  It's a heck of a way to get to northern California, and not really much of a vacation, but we'll do our best to make your stay here pleasant (we live about 25 minutes from Stanford).  If you haven't had the benefit of meeting other MM patients, it may help you to meet my daughter, Tara.  Seeing her in such robust health has proven to be very inspirational for people!

Anyway, I won't make this any longer.  If you'd like to talk on the phone, please send a pm and we can exchange #s.  (My husband was born on Coronado and grew up in San Diego, so is asking what part of SD you live in.)

Hang in there, and we'll look forward to speaking with you!

Warmly,
Jill

Hi Jill,
Thanks so much for taking the time to share the info. I realize that alot of the post-op reactions are patient specific, I just wanted to get heads-up on what to expect.  It may just be my husband and I traveling up to Stanford, we're not sure yet.  We have 2 daughters one is 18 and the other 7 both are in school.  We're not sure how the 7 yr old (Blake) will react to me being in the hospital, the HAIRCUT  Shocked etc. So we might have family come and stay at our house and not mess with the sked too much.  We have time to work that out.  We live in Oceanside.  That's funny that your husband grew up down here and my husband grew up in Eureka & Montegue (near Mt. Shasta) so we are familiar with the long drive.  We'll probably end up driving up.  My husband is going to be BORED out of his mind.  I guess that's where you guys will come in - he is a people person.  You'll be his best friends within the hour.  I am blessed, that's for sure!  How do I get your pm to send you my #?  I haven't had the oppty to meet very many MM patients.  I've been online since June, but I haven't posted much.  I am looking forward to meeting MM'ers in the Stanford area while I'm up there.  I'll talk to you soon!  Blessings, Lee  Wink

Hi Lee,

I just saw your post about PM'ing Jill, and thought I'd help if you don't mind, and also let you know you'll be in my thoughts and prayers. You'll do great, I'm sure. Just think Lee... You've got all the MM family praying for ya, from all over the world, and the best doctor in the world, and the best staff for handling this surgery, and Jill, and her family are just a blessing. Ya gotta love all that on your side!!

As far as PMing someone...You just click on the name (I D) of whoever it is you want to send a PM, (private message) to, and it will take you to there "profile page", and at the bottom of the page, it will say, "send this person a private message" Then when you click on it, you'll see your very own mailbox and go from there.

Once again... we'll be with you in spirit, the whole time.

Hi, Lee:

I am Tingxin, we live in Los Angeles area as Jill mentioned in her posted. Jill and her daughter are wonderful to us while we were there in Stanford for my daughter's first surgery done on Jan 20th last month.

We chose to drive because we feel it is more flexible.
We drove there on Jan 17th to get all the tests done before the surgery. Then drove back on 24th, the day she was discharged. Driving back was no problem at all last time. Next time, we'll drive again but we will stay in the town for another two days after discharge because it is left side that affects language and Dr. Steinberg suggested us to stay a little longer in around. In case there is a complication, we can go back easily.

Also we stayed in a hotel called HomeStead suite.
It has a little kitchen, so food was not a problem to us.

For the effect after the surgery, my daughter's most problem was the nausea, pain was not issue for her.

Best Regards!
Tingxin

It's been a long time since my MM surgeries but the one thing I remember after those surgeries was the nausea that came after it.  It's not fun being sick but bear with it and you'll be up and running in no time.  Best of luck!

Thank you to all of you!  I believe that it's because I'm held up in prayer that I haven't had a stroke.  God knows my name and number of my days!  You guys are awesome!  So willing to share information.  As I said, I will let you know the dates as soon as I find out.  We are shooting for 3/8.  Tinxindan, thank you for sharing the info about having the left-side done and to expect extra days in the hospital.  I think that's the side Dr. Steinberg is planning on doing first.  Take care, Lee
