problems with med insurance and boston
Feb 17th, 2006 at 7:49am

We live in PA and want to see Dr. Scott in Boston for our son; our insurance says he is out of network which means they will pay only about fifty percent of anything he does. I don't know how to make up that other 5o percent for surgery if that is decided what with travel and lodging and all

Any ideas about an attorney?

Is arguing that he is the closest real specialist in moyamoya  a viable option ?
thanks

Hi Desdemona,

The fact your insurance has an out-of-network benefit is a plus even if it is reduced to 50% payment. Is the 50% payment based on UCR? You may want to mention this to Dr. Scott and  pay only UCR balances not actual charges. Perhaps Dr. Scott  and the hospital will work with you on this.

You may have other options available to you such as asking the insurance company to consider a network contract with Dr. Scott so you will be in network rather than out-of-network.  You should have an appeal process through your insurance company. Usually the appeal needs to be in writing.  If your insurance is through an employer, and the insurance is self funded, you may want to also appeal to the employer. You might also ask the employer to get involved with the insurance company as it relates to your specific case.

Most insurance companies have "Centers of Excellence". You may want to ask your insurance company if they have them.  I would argue the fact this is still considered a rare disease and there are only a few moyamoya specialist in the U.S. I would think, given the rareity of moyamoya, that your insurance company would take this into consideration. You may want to speak to someone at the insurance company who has the authority to take your case to the next level. It is really better if you can put it in writing and send to the insurance company appeal dept.  If all else fails, and your son requires surgery, you may want to consider a "fund raiser".

I don't know that an attorney can necessarily help. It depends on a number of factors. However, you can always call an attorney as some don't charge for a consultation.

Often employer group insurance contracts stand in the way of flexibility depending on whether the employer is self-funded or fully-insured. If self-funded, the employer accepts all the risk and can therefore, call the shots. On the other hand, if fully- insured, the insurance company accepts all the risk and they call the shots.

I hope this helps. Please keep me posted on any progress with the insurance company and also to let me know how your son is doing.

Hugs,

Lore

Hi D,
I have problem w/ insurance too, I find out I have MM on 1/12, my dr. here in Richmond, VA refer me to neuro in UVA dr. Kassell, who is schedules me to be surgery on 3/20.  My insurance said that he out of network and they won't paid and it is too speciallize we have to pick other name and they check thought it , so my husband come to his employer to talk to them, insurance now send me to dr. Tamargo @ Johnhopkin hospital in MD. Make story short, my husband have call insurance member services, call insurance medical director, talk to his boss, and even a insurance broker involve.  I don't know how good this doctor is but I hear good thing about him and hospital so I go with it my 1st appt is 2/28.  Insurance will paid for hotel stay, mileage if we drive, airplane ticket and any parking and pay toll.
So if I was you I will call your insurance and ask for medicine director and tell him about this disease, they are not aware of how danger it is( like my husband said that I caring a timing bomb).  Goodluck  Smiley

I just want to add to the above posts that ALWAYS ALWAYS battle your insurance company if something doesn't sound right.  I had a recent issue with my company for some tests I had done at Columbia and it just didn't make sense.  It is truly a pain, and there's a part of me that wants to say who cares, I'll pay the extra money for the peace of mind, but to put it bluntly, I don't believe the health care industry deserves the profit.  When the codeine during my surgery costs the normal $.25 per pill insted of the $25 per pill they charged my insurance company, I won't make an issue.  Until then, phone calls will abound from me, for sure!

I'll get off my soapbox -- just want to remind you all not too be intimidated by the insurance companies!!

I need to second what Trina said.....ALWAYS appeal your insurance's company's decision if it doesn't work in your favor.  Like Lore said, maybe Dr. Scott's office can help - perhaps they can write a letter in your behalf to the insurance company?  Insurance companie's make me so mad sometimes!

However, just to let you know, if all else fails, the hospital will work with you on payments.  My insurance company paid most of my costs, but not all.  I was paying about $50.00 a month on my hospital/professional/anestesia bills.  It took me about two years to pay off.  Bottom line, as long as you are willing to pay a monthly amount, the hospital WILL work with you - don't worry about that.

It's always worth the battle for good care. I had to battle Medicaid for Tyler. It was hard and scary, but Tyler was able to go to Stanford in the end.

Good Luck!

Hi, Desdemona.

It's been a while since you posted your question, so you may have already solved your problem.  I just wanted to give you some info, in case you're still working on it.

Dr. Scott performed the surgery on both of my daughters.  Thankfully, we only live about an hour from the hospital.  However, what I did notice while we're there, is that the hospital has a "host family" program - families that offer to have patient's families stay with them during treatment, for free.  Also, while we were there, since both my husband and I needed to take unpaid time off from work, the social work department was actually able to pay a few of our bills (utilities, phone, etc).  While this won't pay your insurance bill, it may help save you money in other ways.  There may be other things they can do for  you, too, - try calling the social work department and explain the situation.

We live in NH.  If you end up coming to Boston, and would like to talk more, send me a PM, and I'll be happy to talk with you more!

Good Luck!
