Laughing and Headaches
May 12th, 2006 at 11:45pm

Hey all...

I just came back from a comedy show, and the comedian was HILARIOUS.  I was laughing my head off.  Literally.  I laughed so hard, that I laughed myself into a major headache.  This has happened once before since my surgeries (May 2005) and last time my mom told me to stop laughing before I hurt myself into a TIA, or worse, a stroke.

Has anyone else had this happen to them before?

Considering not laughing is not a possibility, cuz I love to laugh, any suggestions (bag breathing or something like that)?  (Please don't say Tylenol, cuz it doesn't do anything for me, and I am not allowed Advil/Aleve and the like).

Your thoughts are much appreciated...

Trina

Since we know crying can bring on headaches and other symptoms, I would think laughing could, too.  I guess you could hyperventilate either way.   The bag breathing might be worth trying!

I know what you're dealing with. I don't have MM, my son does, but I have gotten headaches from laughing too hard.

My headaches have been short lived, even though they are the worse headaches I get. They are bad enough that I try to stop and take a few breaths, when I do find something making me laugh so hard. I am guessing it is the same as a migrain. The blood flow slows and then returns so fast it hurts.

When laughing, as with crying, you don't breathe in as much as you breathe out. Therefor the brain isn't getting as much oxygen. Then when you calm down the oxygen rushes to the brain and you end up with a wonderful headache. Atleast this is my take on it.

Maybe just concentrating on breathing deeply when laughing would help?

I think I can help.

I get headaches when I laugh really hard, too. I always have. As you all know I had my surgeries about 17 years ago...

This may sound weird, but I just try not to get "carried away" when laughing.. or crying forthat matter! I try to make sure I keep myself at a normal range of laughing. A little bit of cracking up is ok, but too much and I am in a dark from for hours, maybe days. I still laugh and enjoy life.. So, no need to stop that!

I hope this helps and makes sence.
