Is Mitchell safe without his helmet?
Aug 9th, 2006 at 10:21pm

Hi Guys, Has been ages since my last post due to no computer, but are all systems go again now, and really need some advice.

Mitchell's second surgery was almost five years ago, and I am happy to say, besides minor problems Mitchell is doing amazingly well.

Since Mitchells surgeries, he has worn a helmet whenever outdoors basically, whether he's been on playing equipment, or running around with his friends etc, hes always worn it to protect his head.(he still has quite a significant lump on the left side of his head).
Mitchell's Neurologist has said he thinks he should be fine without the helmet now, but I feel worried.  I have tried to get intouch with Mitchells surgeon, but he is on long service leave until September.

Has anybody else had to wear a helmet, and for how long?  I really need all the advice I can get.  Mitchell would be thrilled to not have to wear the helmet again, but when it has been drilled into me for such a long time to protect his head, I feel somewhat uneasy about it.

Please help.
Kalise. Undecided

Kalise -

Sorry we didn't respond sooner.  Just to let you know, this year's MM gathering was right after you posted your question, so I, for one, was doing some last minute packing before heading out the next day for Orlando.

Anyway, to get to your question.  I believe it's a law here, in most states, that children have to wear helmets when riding a bike.  I, for one, refuse to ride a bike without a helmet.  As far as any other activities...how old is Mitchell now?  Does he know to be carefull of his head?  For example, when playing sports?  It's hard to say, but I would definitely consult a doctor about not using the helmet as much.

Just my thoughts.....

Kalise:

I may be the only person on this board who had to wear a helmet!!

I am so glad  I stummbled upon your post!

I had my surgeries 15 - 16 years ago and I had to wear a helmet when I players soccer, or played when I might hit my head.

I only had to wear it for maybe 6 months, though. I am sure your son will be just fine helmet free...

Does he have bone missing from his head? I didn't, so they just wanted me to wear it while I healed. It was like my cast. And, I will tell you, I was SO GLAD to get rid of it. I bet he will be happy, too!! I was even called mushroom head a few times... not fun!

Try not to worry too much! I played sports, dove from cliffs, etc.... And I am still here to tell about it.

If you need anything else, please ask!

Take care and give Mitchell a hug for me!

About Mitchell not wearing a helmet-- I fell backwards off a 3 step latter and landed on the back of my head and had 10 staples then while I was openning a box 2 days later I lost my balance and fell backwards (again) and hit my head in the same spot.......(why I am still alive----I don't know) I had a concussion and have NOT been the same since (I think I might have had a Stroke with the second fall) Because I haven't been the same since..I have NO Balance and Fall alot and am constantly bumping into things CryAlso My husband flipped on a 4--wheeler almost 2 years ago and died from severe head truma (not wearing a helmet)

Elaine:

Kalise is asking about her son having to wear a helmet at ALL TIMES while playing outside. All I was saying is that I don't think there is any higher risk for him bacause he has MM. Of course, anyone can fall and get a concussion.

Sorry to hear about your husband. My husband rides motorcycles but he ALWAYS wears a helmet. Even on his bicycle.
