Hi Daniel,

I’m so sorry to hear your daughter had a massive stroke. My heart goes out to you more than you know. It’s so hard to see someone you love go through all that and still believe they can improve, but believe me Daniel, they can! My niece had 4 damaging, massive strokes. She was in a coma, on a feeding tube, paralyzed and so on, yet she improved miraculously over time. I personally give all credit for her progress to the grace of God first, and then of course to Dr. Steinberg, who performed her surgeries and got immediate blood flow to her brain when and where she needed it, when other doctors wouldn't. I wish I could say the same improvement will happen with your daughter, my prayers will certainly be with her, but sadly, I can’t really say that would happen in every case, because the damage caused from the stroke may be different with each person or affect a different area of the brain, along with many other individual factors. I don’t know your daughters’ specifics or if her surgery was successful in replenishing the proper blood supply to the brain, but I do know that ya never give up hope, and for as many heartbreaking things I’ve seen with this disease, I’ve also seen more wondrous miracles as well. We'll keep praying for your daughter!

If there’s anything we can do or if you have any questions, or need to just talk or vent, please feel free. We’re like family here and understand what you’re going through.

A big hug to you and your daughter Smiley

Your story sounds similar to ours. How old is your daughter? Our daughter was five when she had her surgeries and her worse strokes.she too had a stroke the day befoer surgery in fact it was when we were driving to Boston Children's Hospital.she had strokes on both sides 4 days after the first surgery. She too was like an infant after this(except she hadn't lost the ability to eat). She couldn't talk our even lift her head off the bed.We spent a month in a rehab hospital and then lots of therapy at home and in school.she's walking talking and even reading and writting now.Her speech is delayed and she tires very easy. She walks with a limp and uses a brace on her elft leg and a wheelchair for distances. To help her walk we first used a standing frame, and then a Gait Trainer to get weightbearing on her legs this was what they said would get movement back.she still ahs no functional use of ehr left hand and arm but we do see progress very slowly but I'll take whatever I can get. I never give up hope that she'll get  use to at least be a "helper hand".When she's tired I see her head droop and she will lean a lot to the left(her most affected side)more and she still has a problem with a little drooling(especially if she's working hard on something). It's been over four years, and lots of therapists will tell you they can't get much back after this long but believe me I've seen even adults make progress for many years after their strokes,so it's good that you can accept whatever progress she makes, and never give up hope.We celebrate every tiny step forward and this is what keeps Kathleen going, lots of "yahoos" and high fives. We've been trying electrical stimulation on her left hand for a while and it seems to be helping (slowly).I would love to hear  more of your story and how your daughter is doing. If you want you can even e-mail me direct ,Take care sn know your family is in my prayers.
