Moyamoya and Small/Light Aircraft

right... so lucky me, an old school friend just got back from overseas and he has his pilot's licence and wants to take me out in a small plane - say cessna 150/172 - for a scenic flight... this plane will obviously not be pressurised, and we could reach heights up to 3000ft.... IS THIS SAFE with Moyamoya? anyone know?

[sorry if this has been discussed, couldn't really be bothered doing a search past the first page! hehe]

Hey Em,
I would email Lore or Cubby (Kevin) Re: this subject.
Kevin is apparently a pilot and this topic has been discussed before I think

Hi Emily,

Long time no talk to. LOL!

Kevin (Cubbie) is a pilot. He said 3,000 feet is really nothing. He said an airliner at 35,000 feet is pressurized at 8,000 feet. So simply put, he said you could go probably 6,000 to 8,000 feet in a small aircraft without any problems. He did say that it can also depend on the individual and how that individual feels. He said you can go 3,000 feet and see how you feel and the pilot can take it higher say up to 6,000 feet and see how you feel. He said the feet is measured above sea level or above ground level. So if you are 900 feet above sea level and altitude of 3,000 feet you are 3,900 feet up.

Cubbie feels you can probably go 8,000 feet with no problem but he did say to work your way up above 3,000 feet to see how you personally feel.

Hope this helps.

Happy site seeing!

Hugs,

Lore and Kevin (Cubbie)

And I'm not trying to be funny when I say this, but does that mean we can't go skydiving?  I have always wanted to do this, and don't know if I'll be doing this any time soon, but I'd surely like to know.

Hi Apu Smiley

You could go up in the plane to 10.000 feet, but the freefall @ 125 MPH  to 5000 feet when they pull the shute and you go to 5 MPH in 2 seconds, might be a problem! and it kinda hurts!

My 2 cents
Kevin

PS: Emily i emailed you hope it helps.

Learning something new every day! I didn't know Kevin was a pilot! My oldest son has his private and instrumental licence. He is now doing his graduate work in college and he is going for his MBA in Airport Management. He absolutely loves to be around planes. He was scribbling planes all over his school papers since he was 8 yrs old! I am relieved to know I can safely go up with him if I wish too. (I wasn't sure if I was allowed) Thanks for the info.

Now Trina.....jumping out of planes...seems a little risky even for those without MM!!!! You're too funny girlfriend.
Sorry, I won't be joining you in that adventure.

hugs to all....Diane

Hi Trina, Apu, Knucklehead, Curley,

You crack me up!

NO SKYDIVING!!!!

Kevin has been skydiving but that was before he had strokes and before he was diagnosed with MM.

Personally, I'm not that adventurous or that much of a thrill seeker. I used to go flying with Kevin but I never had the desire to jump out of the plane at 10,000 feet and fall at a rate of 125 MPH and then jerked by pulling the shute. I invision my cheeks slapping me silly just from the force of the wind at 125 MPH and my torso in my chest after pulling the shute. Kevin did say that skydiving is a rush and a thrill. I personally will never experience it. lol!

Hugs,

Lore

Hi I have been diagnosed with MM since dec 04 and i flew 2 weeks after my surgery but i flew delta and when descending the pressure was so horribly bad i cried. I flew last year and it was almost no pain very little. So I mean I am getting ready to fly again to hawaii and I am hoping I will have the same results.

I am bummed.  The consensus says skydiving is a huge stroke risk.  Cry   I would love the thrill.  Of course, this morning I watched a guy whose parachutes didn't open (not even backup) and lived to tell about it.  AND it was all on videotape.  Still not deterred, but bummed.

And bungee jumping too?  I can't imagine that that is too risky.  It's not too high up?  I was given the ok for hot air ballooning in Colorado so I would think bungee jumping would be ok too.

I actually have no interest in scuba diving.  I can barely snorkel without choking myself.  Smiley

Thanks for the tips all!

i think with bungee jumping its the sudden change in pressures etc.. when you hit the bottom and are jerked back up again....

but then again my surgeons didn't want me doing handstands for similar reasons and i sure havent listened to that one...

So I heard back from Teresa/Dr. Steinberg today, and he put it in two words.  No skydiving.   Smiley

Basically, skydiving and bungee jumping were not recommended respectively because of altitude pressure and its effects not being predictable and the jerking movements effect on the neck/carotid arteries.

I still wonder what would have happened if I went years ago before I even knew about moya moya.  Hmmm...

I'm bummed, but I'm not complaining -- it could be worse.  I still got my hot air balloon ride to look forward to!   ;Grin
