My father had a massive stoke 23 years ago.  He is paralyzed on his left side.  The diagnoses was Moya Moya.

I am now 40 yrs old and am having the mini strokes.  Can you tell me is Moya Moya is genetic could I also have this too.

I am going to my first appointment today.

Hi Patty,  Smiley  Welcome to our MM family.

I’m sorry to hear you’re having mini strokes, I know they can be frightening, and they're definately a sign/symptom of MMD, so you’re very wise to get to a doctor and get tested ASAP. As you know, this is a progressive disease, so prompt diagnosis and treatment is vital.

The cause of MM is unknown, but because it does tend to run in families, researchers think that MMD may be the result of inherited genetic abnormalities.

If when you’re tested you find out that you do in fact have MMD, I have to tell you how important it is that you find a doctor who has experience treating this rare disease. I’m sure it’s much better than it was 20 years ago when your father was diagnosed, but unfortunately many in the medical community still do not know enough about this rare disease to always approach the treatment the best way for each individual case. So experience can save a life.

We’re like family here and will be happy to help you in any way we can. No question is too small. Please feel free to ask away.

You'll be in my thoughts and prayers...

Please keep us posted…

Mar

Hello patty Smiley
Yes, MM can be genetic. My mother and I
have the disease. It's a rare disease what are the chances of one person getting it? So we were shocked to find out that we both had it. Our neurologist said"it was genectics in our case. It's a good thing to have yourself checked out. My thought and prayers are with you, and hopes that you don't have MM.
