Mar 23rd, 2007 at 2:17pm

Hello my son Tyler is 6 months old he had Moyamoya surgery in Boston on Feb 20.  He now had to get a VP shunt put in for drainage.  Did anyone else have to get a shunt??

I haven't heard of this, but that doesn't mean much. Would you mind telling me why they are having to drain, I am assuming, blood.  I am so sorry for your family.  How frustrating and incredibly unsettling this be for you all.  Sorry to hear of this.

My daughter and my sister both have MM In feburary my sister went back to the hospital after having her second surgery in january. she developed an infection they did another surgery to check the infection. 7days later they went back in and removed the bone plate in her head, when they did they put a drain in her head and she had a drain in her spine. aparently you can leak cerebral spinal fluid from the wound. It is ok because your body makes plenty. In my sisters case  the csf was preventing her incision from healing and lead to a massive infection. she is still on iv antibiotics for 6 weeks. so it might be better for him to have the shunt now, insted of later. i hope this helps
