Wow! Things are moving FAST!

Imagine a rollercoaster.....

You have all these little hills and valleys, some twists here and there, then you start "The Big Climb". So far on your ride it's the biggest hill you've seen. You know there's gonna be a BIG FAST DROP at the top. Right now, I feel like we're at the very crest of our first BIG HILL.

On Tuesday evening we'll bring Angela into our local children's hospital for a full-spine MRI. Kids with DS sometimes have some spinal anomalies and they just want to rule out that her gait issues aren't related to that or any other spinal problems. Nobody really thinks that's the problem, but want to rule it out anyway. You know, cover ALL the bases.

On Weds next week we arrive at Mayo at 12:30, then meet with the Dr Meyer the neurosurgeon and a Neurologist. After that she'll be admitted overnight, then Thursday morning will have an SPECT and Angiogram.

Friday we will know everything we need to know to make a surgical decision. We'll either be going to Boston, Stanford, or hanging out...waiting for.......????????

I keep thinking somewhere in this process someone is gonna say "you are WAY off base here. This isn't MMD, it's just ........." I know that's my own survival instincts kicking in, but still. I have hope someone says someone along the way is way wrong here!

thanks MG. Angela is in surgery now having her angio gram done. Dr. Meyer does NOT think she has MMD! She clearly  has right brain disfunction going on, and there is what he terms a "small narrowing of both the left and right carotid" but ZERO revascularization. He doesn't feel at this time there would be any surgical interventions needed, but we'll know for sure after the angio.

The SPECT was cancelled because they can't do them both on the same day at the same time as the angio, so it will be rescheduled for a later time. There are more detials on my blog. I'm still kind of confused.

They should be calling me in a few minutes to say she's done, so I better log off. THANKS for the prayers!

I'm sorry, but I just don’t get any of this. You stated that Angela has a significant blockage in her LEFT carotid artery that was not there before and that it is WORSE than the original blockage on the right. That means progressive arterial narrowing, right? Then you say he doesn’t feel any surgical interventions are needed. OMG, this just doesn’t make any sense to me. The danger of a stroke is right there in the facts you stated. I just don't get it.

I agree with Jenny 100%, a second opinion may prove to be much more optimistic and perhaps life saving.

UGH! I was in the middle of posting a reply from Mayo's surgical waiting room, but they called me before I could finish it.

Anyway, it's our original neuro that said she had a signficant blockage. We saw Dr. Meyer at Mayo yesterday, and he didn't feel it was significant. There, but not "significant".

Here is what he did see on the MRI ( this is my understanding but I will clarifiy it with him tomorrow when we talk again.) Within the Circle of Willis she is missing one vessel on the right side, but the same one on the left has crossed over to the right side and is doing what it's supposed to be doing. This is NOT the same as revascularization, and he didn't really seem concerned with it.

He did say, based on the symptoms over the past several weeks, that she clearly had a right-brain dysfunction. Weather or not it can happen again is unknown. On the MRI it doesn't appear she's had any strokes. So...we'll see what the Angiogram says, and if there's anything going on that wasn't seen on the MRI. Dr. Meyer will be conferring with Dr. Steinberg and Dr. Scott as well.
