Question for Dr Steinburg experiece
Jun 9th, 2007 at 6:24pm

Who checks on yoy ( the Patient) after the surgury has taken place in the event, your from a different state than california?

Also does anyone have any pictures of what their scares have healed to post surgury.

My reason for asking...
I sent my information, CT'S, And angeogram to him and now he says he wants to preform surgury. But as i'm sure like anyone else what type of "Line" will there be after words and will it disapear? I'm african American and have a darker skin color then DJ after looking at this pics it seems the scare just kinda blinded into his color. Thanks

My daughter's scar is hid by all her hair unless the wind blows sometimes it can be seen. Some of the area of the scar the hair grew back and some didn't. Wink

Without coming across too blunt, I don't think this is the time for vanity. It is your health at stake here and if you have surgery you will have a scar, but with my surgery, they cut along my hairline on one side and the other side just had a wedge of hair shaved and now that has covered up and healed on both sides and you would never know. There is a lot more care taken with aesthetics with these kinds of operations these days as no-one wants horrible ugly scars but I personally would prefer to be alive!!
You will not be able to tell that you have had surgery 6 months afterwards. If you are so concerned about scars there is always the option of cosmetic surgery, but I am sure that when you are dealing with the calibre of doctors you will be (Dr. Steinberg) he will have your best interests at heart and do the job that he has been professionally trained to do - SAVE YOUR LIFE, with minimal aftereffects.

Moyamoi has put things into proper perspective....your health!

As for the scars and how and where they will actually be located on the patient differs greatly from one person to another.

Your scar will be placed according to where YOUR STA (superficial temporal artery) is mapped (via doppler) on your head. It is different for all of us....that ultimately remains to be determined in the surgical arena itself.

If you are considering Dr Steinburg, well....you are in absolutely great hands....and that is what really counts.

Hey.....I was so proud of my scars......I wear them like a badge of honor! I earned them and they are mine....with all the bragging rights that go with it!!!!!

Oh and as for who will monitor you after surgery, as you are from another state..... You will need a good recommendation for a vascular neurologist near where you live. I believe the folks at Stanford would certainly give you the best choices to followup with your care locally. And if you can......you can always return to Stanford for followup...although, that is not practical for some patients due to time and money restrictions. But, as long as you have a good Doc to monitor you....then you should do just fine.

I hope all goes very smoothly and with minimal scars for you.

best wishes...Diane

Everyone thanks for your replies...
My wife has said the same thing, about the scar verses staying alive...

I guess i have always had a concern for my looks, whether it be my skin, hair, teeth, etc... and now the scar if there will need to be one for sure.

Today is the day i go for a 3rd opinion to see if every doc is saying surgury or if there are other options. If he says surgury i'd like to go to Dr Steinburg but my family is pushing The 3rd opinion here in MIlwaukee because he's local and will be able to follow up better. But my thing is Dr Steinburg has dealt with more than 400 cases equaling more than 400 surguries.

So long story short...
Should i go to this local Dr. What is the chance of him doing something and messing something up in my head?

Hi,

We lived in California at the time of my daughters surgery.  We then moved to Texas  less then 3 months after (with Dr. Steinbergs blessing).  Holly and I then flew back for the 3 month post op check up.

Since then, he has released her, and we see a local neurosurgeon who has had a little experience with MM.

We have learned that none of her doctors will take any chance with her, they communicate with Dr. Steinberg when needed.  I also call his office from time to time with a question.  They have been very helpful.

IMO, you need to go with whomever you are the most comfortable with, as you are the one having the surgery.

Have a great day!

Hillary

Dr Stienberg did not do my surgery. I had mine done at the Mayo clinic. My nurologert (who knows about MM) is checking my progress. I was sent there by another nurologest who said I couldn't have it because I am not asian. The surgen and nurologest at the Mayo sugested this nurologest that I am seeing now.

My scar is hidden by my hair. My husband says i am getting some hair back but there is a few spots that looks like never. Hey I am alive and doing well I can live with a battle scar.

Becides it is cool! All my family and friends have wanted to see it. It is a geart story and you have something to show for it forever. I have a soft spot too and some even want to touch it (gently of corse)!

Ask Dr. Steinburg if there is some one closer to your home that you should see for falow ups if you don't have time to go all the way out there.

Becky

What doesn't kill us, makes us stronger. And sometimes leaves a cool looking scar.     STA-MCA bypass and EMS Surgeries done at same time at the Mayo clinic

You have to make decisions about your care as you see appropriate, but IMO, you have to ask yourself, are you and your family basing your decisions on the many important factors related to MMD? This is a rare disease and there are many important factors to consider to help assure a successful surgery. Experience and knowledge of this disease would be a number one factor, IMO. To know which method of surgery is best for your particular case and how much experience the surgeon has with each method. This is brain surgery; a very complicated and intricate procedure. It involves many meticulous steps in too many areas to mention. I would want to examine that EXPERIENCE with everyone involved in the process, to better assure a successful outcome.

As far as other options, I wish there were other options for MMD, but surgical management is the only option to reduce the risk of a stroke, and delay could allow unnecessary progression of disease.

That's my  Smiley

Good Luck!

Hi...We are from Pennsylvania.  Our daughter received her surgeries about 2 years ago at Stanford.  We followed up with Dr. Steinberg for post-op studies about 6 months after surgeries.  Besides that, we see a local neurologist, and she receives regular MRAs here in PA.  We always send Dr. Steinberg a copy of her studies, and he always has responded quickly by phone whenever we've called with problems/questions.  He is also very good about communicating with other doctors who take care of you.

It has not been a problem for us.

Also, Daphne's scars are barely visible, and she has short, baby-thin hair.  You can see them if you look really closely, but unless you look for them, you don't see them at all.  I'd be happy to send you some pictures.  She has lots of photos on her website (www.daphnestory.com), but I haven't updated it in well over a year (tech problems).

Daphne does have light skin.... hopefully some darker skinned people will also chime in.  I don't blame you for being concerned about it.  We all worry about stuff like that, even if we know that it's not the most important thing in the world -- sometimes it's easier to worry about the little things than the scarier stuff.

Good luck!
Jenny
