First Stroke After Car Accident Anyone?
May 1st, 2008 at 9:09pm

Did anyone on this site find they had Moyamoya after a whip lash injury caused by a car accident? I know that my first stroke occured during an accident when I was rear-ended and pushed into the car in front of me. I got a pretty good thrashing. I was unconcious for a brief period and afterwards my left arm hurt and was somewhat immobilized - that's the same side that was affected by a second stroke nine months later.

I seem to remember reading a post from twins with Moyamoya who were in an auto acccident, but can't seem to find it again.

Thanks,
Kim

I've been trying to remember back to Kathleen's first signs of moyamoya.I do believe it was the around the same time we were rearended. No one was taken to the hospital we all seemed OK she was in the back seat.I've never conected the two because she actually wasn't diagnosed until January and the accident was December. Her symptomes came on sometime in DEcember(in hindsight) but they came on slowly and got worse over the next month until we ended up at the ER late January. They told us she had also had 2 small strokes that we hadn't even known about. She had also gotten sick around this time with sinus infections so I kind of always chalked it up to that as far as making her symptoms worse.Very interesting subject

Hi, there is a post in the "guest book" from March 18th about someone who discovered they had Moyamoya after a car accident but they didn't think the two were related.

Thanks Mary Grace and Audge for your responses. The car accident was in November and the first stroke that I was aware of (it was in fact my second stroke) didn't occur until July. I just got back from my 6-month checkup at Stanford where I asked the resident the same question. He thought that the whip lash itself probably didn't cause the stroke, but that the stress afterwards could have contributed to it. Dealing with the insurance company sure was no picinic. Maybe the Moyamoya had just coincidentally progressed to the point where my organizational skills were nonexistent or maybe it was the stress and pain from the accident and the upsetting negotiations with the insurance copany that contributed to that. I'm not sure, but the good news is that my checkup was GREAT! I don't have to return to Stanford for another 2 1/2 years  ;Grin - I couldn't be happier...
