MoyaMoya and Sarcoidosis
Aug 11th, 2008 at 11:21am

Does anyone know of a connection or link between  MoyaMoya and Sarcoidosis?
I found some sites with heading such as:

Moyamoya disease associated with pulmonary sarcoidosis--case report

and

Moyamoya-Like Vascular Abnormality in Pulmonary Sarcoidosis.

But, it does not say that these are not just a person with moyamoya who had the unlucky draw of the cards to aquire another disease also.  The cards I drew where,  Ovarian Cancer, Aortic Disease, Moyamoya and Sarcoidosis.
Any info would be appreciated.  THANKS!

I am sorry to hear what you were delt. I don't have an answer for you. I would ask Dr. Stinberg's group and see if they might know more. I personal do not have any of those things you mentioned but overian cancer runs in my family. I hope you find an answer.
I will pray for you.

I found some information that was interesting.

I included the reference sites for legality and just in case someone wants to read more.

Our study demonstrates that MMD sera contain a high incidence of anti-alpha-fodrin autoantibodies, providing new insight into the mechanisms of occlusion of MMD arteries
http://www.tripdatabase.com/spider.html?itemid=643299
A higher proportion of MMD patients had the autoantibodies under the condition with apoptotic stimulation. This suggests that MMD patients have autoantibodies to cleavage products of .ALPHA.-fodrin derived from apoptotic HUVEC.

Alpha-fodrin autoantibodies are reliable diagnostic markers for juvenile and adult Sjogren's syndrome

The presence of anti-alpha-fodrin autoantibodies has been reported to be a highly specific and sensitive test for the diagnosis of Sjögren's syndrome

Sarcoidosis link and info:

Sarcoidosis is characterized by noncaseating granulomas. These are different than the caseating granulomas produced by other diseases, especially tuberculosis.
Autoimmune disorders are conditions in which a person's immune system attacks the body's own cells, causing tissue destruction.
This case shows the difficulty sometimes encountered in differentiating between sarcoid and systemic Sjögren's syndrome, and the value of a sublabial salivary gland biopsy.

I found this article especially interesting................................
Sjögren's syndrome (SS) and sarcoidosis are diseases that can affect the salivary glands and result in the loss of salivary gland function. Most of the criteria used for the diagnosis of SS exclude sarcoidosis before establishing the diagnosis of SS. However, several reports have suggested the coexistence of both SS and sarcoidosis in the same patient.
The purpose of this study was to present five cases that support a true coexistence of sarcoidosis and SS. Methods:
Clinical and laboratory findings of patients with evidence of having both SS and sarcoidosis were reviewed. The diagnosis of SS was based on the European community criteria; the diagnosis of sarcoidosis was based on the presence of serological, radiographic and/or histopathologic findings that are consistent with sarcoidosis. Results:
All patients fulfilled the criteria for the diagnosis of both diseases. Conclusion:
Our findings appear to support a true coexistence of sarcoidosis with SS. Therefore, it is reasonable to suggest removing the exclusion of sarcoidosis from the diagnostic criteria for SS.
http://www.ingentaconnect.com/content/mksg/jop/2007/00000036/00000006/art00003
Sarcoidosis is a multi-organ granulomatous disease of unknown cause; it manifests as a multitude of clinical and immunological abnormalities as well as histological features such as non-caseous epithelioid granuloma formation. Previous studies suggest that sarcoidosis can accompany autoimmune diseases including Sjoegren's syndrome, although it is not clear whether they are related in terms of pathogenesis
http://sciencelinks.jp/j-east/article/200011/000020001100A0204446.php

The coexistance of sarcodosis with sjogren's may be more wide spread than litature has suggested.  Both are
multisystem diseases.  Many signs and symptoms are common to both diseases.
