Pain Medication
Dec 8th, 2008 at 5:51pm

Hi, we are new to the message board.  Our daughter was diagnosed with MM about 1 1/2 years ago.  She went through the surgeries (both sides) about 1 year ago.  She still occasionally gets terrible migraine headaches.  We are wondering what pain medication others use who have these headaches.

Also, she takes one aspirin an one motrin each day.  Any suggestions for something other than the motrin.

Thanks so much
Mark

My Nurologest had me on Topamax as a daily migraine supressent. Topamax is concidered a antisezure medication that can also be used as a migrain supressent. I am now on an as needed medication I can't remember what it is called but I will get back to you tomarrow on its name. I do take 81mg of asprin a day too.

My sugestion is to let your nurologest know what is going on so he/she can give you the best medication for her spacific issues. If she needs a daily or an as needed, or both.

I hope this helps. My nurologest has me keep a journal of when I get a migrain, on the sacle of one to ten how bad are they, and if my medication worked. I see him anualay to see how my MM is doing and manage my migraines.

Thanks Becky, our Neurologist put Josie on the aspirin and motrin, but has not really addressed the migraines.  I think his hope was after the surgeries this would not be an issue.  They are not nearly as frequent, but she does still have them on occasion and they seem very severe.  I will talk with our doctor about the medication you mentioned.

The journal idea is a wonderful.  Always hard to be specific when talking with our doctor.

Thanks again

My as needed migraine supressent is generic so i don't have the exact name butalbital/APAP/caffeine. My nurologest sugested the journal so I could remember anything i wanted to ask him in case I forgot.
Good luck,
Becky

Destin hasn't had her surgery yet.  We found her MMD because of her migraines and her surgeonsaid he can't guarantee the saurgery will make the migraines go away...we're just praying it will.  She is also on butal/APAP/caffeine as needed and an aspirin a day.

My daughter is now 14 and had her surgeries just over one year ago.  She used to  have migraines frequently with them getting worse.  Since the surgery, she has only had about 5 or 6 migraines, and they seem less severe.

I hope your daughter has as positive results as mine did.  I know how helpless it feels to have to just watch over your daughter while she struggles with the pain.

How soon before your daughter has her surgery?  We will keep her and your family in our thoughts and prayers,,,,

Becky, thanks for the information, we will talk with Josie's neurosurgeon about that med.  We have also decided to keep a journal, my memory is not very good.....it is a wonderful suggestion.

Hi Mark,  Destin's surgery is Dec. 22...we just got back from Shands an hour ago...doing all the pre-op things.  I am hopeful that the surgery will rid her of most if not all the migraines.  Glad to hear your daughter is doing well.

We will keep destin in our prayers.  Josie's migraines have gotten much better since the surgery, not nearly as many and the few she has have not been nearly as intense.  As long as she drinks enough and watches her diet, she does pretty well.

Very best wishes on the 22nd
