"Plavix and Aspirin a Dangerous Combination".
Jan 7th, 2009 at 8:56pm

I had a anerysum taking plavix and asprin, and i just am concered about those who take it also, my docs here put me on it, when my surgeon and neuro found out i was on it they were confussed and where like why would they put you on it, i am trying to find all info i can this what ive read and found, we cant take risks with our brain if anyone else finds  anything please add it i dont want the same thing to thappen to anyone else Plavix, also known as super aspirin, is manufactured internationally by the Paris-based SanofiSynthelabo and in the US by Bristol-Myers Squibb. This product has been promoted as a product that is safer than aspirin, because it produces fewer ulcers. Recent studies have indicated that this claim isn’t true, and that Plavix increases the risk of death or serious injury from gastrointestinal hemorrhage.

combination of the blood thinner Plavix and aspirin is no better than aspirin alone at preventing deaths, heart attacks, and strokes in people at high risk of cardiovascular disease, a study of more than 15,000 people shows.
And in people with multiple risk factors such as high blood pressure or high cholesterol, the combo may do more harm than good, reports Deepak Bhatt, M.D., a cardiologist at The Cleveland Clinic.
And, always talk to your doctor before taking aspirin or other medicines with PLAVIX, especially if youve had a stroke

A study released in the March 2006 meeting of the American College of Cardiology concluded that the costs and risks of Plavix are too great to recommend its use. The study was funded by the Plavix manufacturer, the Paris-based Sanofi Synthelabo, which hoped to double revenues by showing the effectiveness of Plavix.

Dr. Deepack Bhatt of the Cleveland Clinic headed the study of 15,603 people in 32 countries. The study found that Plavix did not reduce the risk of heart attacks or strokes in most groups as compared to aspirin. There was a slight improvement with Plavix use in patients who had established heart disease, but not enough to prove effectiveness without further study. The improvement in this group was counterbalanced by an increased risk of death from hemorrhage. In patients without a history of heart disease, heart-related deaths almost doubled after using Plavix.

This study is consistent with a study published in the January 20, 2005 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, which found that patients taking Plavix had 12 times more ulcers than those taking aspirin with a heartburn medicine. This finding was significant, since both the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association had recommended the expensive Plavix, because they believed it caused fewer ulcers than aspirin.

If you or a loved one is using Plavix, you might want to consult your health care provider about the likelihood of side effects. If you have already been injured by using Plavix, you should have your case evaluated by a competent Plavix attorney. See Plavix Attorney and Lawyer – How to Hire to find out how to find one.

After my stroke before they diagnosed me I was on 375mg of asprin and cumidan. Then with all the INR testing and my arms getting very brused from the needels they switched me from cumiden to plavix. My husband has said while i was on cumiden and plavix my mental capibility was very slow and I alywas seemed lost.  Then I went to the mayo clinic in MN and they said it was MM and I had to go off all my meds so they could to the surgery. After my surgery they said all I needed was 81mg of asprin. My husband (and my school work) have notaced great inprovement. I don't know if I would contrubit it all to plavix or just me  healing but this is my 2 cents.

My 2 cents!!  LOL
After my stroke a doctor put me on Plavix and 325 aspirin.  Within about 5-7 days I was covered in hives..big, ugly, dinner plate sized, very raised, hives.  My hands and arms were so swollen they couldn't get an IV in me.  I looked like I had boxing gloves on!  I couldn't get my shoes on, etc from the swelling.  I had NEVER in my life been allergic to anything!  But that is what the diagnosis was. I went off all medication and within a few days the swelling went down.  I went back on the aspirin, since I had taken it before without problems, but refused the plavix.  My nuero has recommended aggrenox, but it is too expensive.

I have been on Plavix and 325mg. aspirin since 2004. Besides having mm I had a cardict arrest that same year. I had to have a defibrillator put in at that time. Then in 2005 I had a heart attack. Found I have heart disease. I have had no side effects except for easy bruising. I am trying to balance both mm and heart disease.

There's an ongoing study regarding the effectiveness in stoke prevention for those taking Plavix (Clopidegrel) with Aspirin as opposed to Aspirin alone. I'm not sure when it will end or when the results will be published. I had been on both before surgery, but afterwards Dr. Steinberg had me stop the Plavix and take only the 325mg of Aspirin.
My Dad just had two stints put into his heart artery. His cardiologist told us that the Plavix will keep the stint from clogging. He's still taking his 325mg of Aspirin.
Seems like different physicians are choosing different treatments. Maybe that will change after the study results are published.
