Depakote and Headache Prevention?
Apr 10th, 2009 at 8:11am

Hi all,

I have written in the past about my 14 yr. old son dealing with daily chronic headaches.  He was diagnosed with MM when he was 4 and had bilateral surgery at that time.  He had been doing well overall until the past several months where the headaches have become much more frequent and severe.  The doctors have tried him on Topamax (didn't help) and now are considering he try Depakote.  I just wanted to know if any of you had experience with this drug and if you had found any help with headaches from it.

Thanks so much for your replies!
Gretchen

Hello.  When I was DX in 20005 I went on a generic of Neurontin, I then went to Depakote. It worked really well against the headache but it always made me sick to my stomach. So much that I was forced to stop taking it.  In 2006 I was given Topamax.  I thought it worked well with an added benefit of my losing 5 pounds.  Did it affect your son in that way as well?  I had double STA-MCA bypasses in March/April of 2006.  Since then I have not needed anything more than 1,000 MG of Extra-Strength Tylenol.  I would give the medicine at least 2 weeks to work before you decide to do anything.  Best of luck!  MMnewtUt/Natalie
