Hair growth after EDAS
May 3rd, 2009 at 10:24pm

First of all, I am very happy to announce that my brother had his follow up with Dr. Neil Martin at UCLA last week and a month after EDAS surgery he is doing well and cleared to go back to work and most of his regular life!!!   Grin  So far none of the numbness that he felt for 2 years.  He has to go back for another angiogram in 6 months, but so far so good!  Thank you all for your support!  Me and my family greatly appreciate it!

Now after all the months of agonizing over the surgery, I am pleased to say that my brother's only concern now is hair growth along the incision.  So far he's not seeing any growth and is wondering if it's permanent.

Anyone have a similar experience and if so, what to do about it!

Thanks again!

wllanos,
I am sorry to say it may not grow back. I am almost 5 years post op. I had the STA-MCA and EMS (indirect bypass -> muscle (and it's bloody supply) is laid down on the surface of the brain and left to grow). I have one larger bare patch behind my ear, and the thin line from my for head connectind the larger patch. I am a girl so i have benable to hide the patch and the lin with my hair. I would not worry about it. It gives me strength since i had open brain surgey and I am still alive to tell the tail!! I look at my scar as a opertunity to tell my story to other so they are more aware of MM. Since i am a girl I have an option to show it or not.  But i am only one of many, so maybe others have had more luck with regrowth.
I hope this helps!

What doesn't kill us, makes us stronger. And sometimes leaves a cool looking scar.     STA-MCA bypass and EMS Surgeries done at same time at the Mayo clinic

my daughter had her bypasses last november and happy to say that her hair is at least 3 inches long already. On one side I can't hardly find the scar and on the other it is easy to find but still covered with hair.    Christie

wllanos,
I also had the indirect by-pass surgery like Becky. Mine was done almost six years ago. I have always worn my hair very short even before surgery. I have a thin scar line and a small patch by the ear like Becky. I am lucky to have a hairdresser who knows about my surgery and is able to cover my scar. Tell your brother to give it time and he may have to let his hair grow longer than he did before to cover the scar.

Hey wllanos

Luca is 6 months post surgery and her hair re-growth appears to be covering all signs of the scar.

Wherever there is scar tissue, the hair will not grow back, but all the surrounding hair should, just give it some time. Becky, I love your attitude! The scars on our heads are a badge of honor and triumph over something that can be really scary. They are also a great conversation starter!

My 7 year old had her surgery three years ago. There are some small areas where I'm sure hair will never grow back. It rarely shows because she grew her hair long. It only shows if the wind blows her hair a certain way. I'd rather have a little missing hair then the alternative.  Grin
