Mike is out of surgery and so far so good.
May 14th, 2009 at 7:32pm

Just wanted to post and say thank you again to those who've been so thoughtful to send there prayers and words of encouragment.
Mike had surgery yesterday. She came wheeling past us at about 2:30pm. Surgery started at 7:40am. When she went by she opened up her eyes and gave us a thumbs up and a lil smile.
Last night was a lil rough for her. She was throwing up a lil off and on and just feeling ..well ..like she'd had brain surgery.
She was moved up out of the Ped's ICU this morning at 11 am to the ICE unit which is 2 bed's per nurse and a lil quieter. They are saying by tomorrow she'll be in a regular room.
Her head bandage they are saying can come off tomorrow. She's been taking off morphine and just given the button to push as she needs it instead of a constant supply.
She is feeling queesy still and tummy upset but they are saying there was some air in the brain and swelling will cause that.
Her right arm was good yesterday and this morning but has weakened some threw out the course of the day. The surgeon has said that's normal based on swelling ect. We should expect to regress a few days and then come right back ..so hopefully that's the case.
Her poor lil eye is black and almost swollen shut. They are going to start giving her steroids to help with swelling.

The CT scan was this morning and they said that the scan looked great. There is no bleeding and that the swelling on the brain itself is minnimal.

I wish I could remember the words the Doctor gave us for her procedures but I don't..I know the vessel wasn't long enough ..so she had an inversion( flipped the brain so another vessel could reach ) and something else done ..so esstentially he said 3 procedures where done on Mike.
I will post in a few days ...my husband is staying tonight at the hospital and tomorrow night is my turn.
Again thank you all ...we are so glad surgery went well and are now just praying to be out of this with no complications and with a speedy recovery !
God Bless

I am delighted for you all.

Hope the nausea and swollen eye get better soon and she's ready for the world with a new and positive outlook.

My best to Mike and your family

Great, great news!

Little Mike and her surgeon are superstars. The swelling and the nausea are definately normal. Luca went through exactly the same. The anaesthetic can also be the cause of the nausea.

I think one of the procedures you're trying to think of is the derma-inversion. Hehe.... I very much doubt they flipped her brain, but probably the muscle, or other tissue, they used was flipped. Don't worry, my brain was completely mushy through our chaos, but it all soon started to make sense.

3 procedures for the price of one..... can't complain. Luca had two done on the one side.

Anyway, I get so excited when someone has a succesfull surgery that I could type all day. I'm ecstatic for the Baird Family.

All the best

Hi,

I'm very happy with Mike's recovery!! As Mark told, swelling and nausea are totally normal the first days after this type of surgery, even fever ... the swelling will improve in one more day, sure, tomorrow she will be much better ...

All the best

Thank you so much ! It's so good to know what's going on now is totally normal.
She was still feeling queezy all day today. Although she didn't throw up ..she held her pail near by. I took her for alil ride in her wheel chair but not far. The physio people had her stand .and then later in the afternoon walk a lil in the hallway. She's not keen on things. Feeling like she does and all. She got alook in the mirror today while going pee and she was not impressed. We keep explaining it will get better every day.
She still isn't eating much. She had maybe 1/4 cup of mushroom soup tonight ..she's finding her jaw is in so much pain to open her mouth. I imagine with all that swelling and her poor lil ear.
They took off the morphine button and are now using tylanol and codiene to control the pain.
I'm wondering how long we should expect to be in hospital ? Can anyone share stories of how long they were there post op ?
Thanks so much ...again ..thank god for this website ..you have all been a true inspiration and a light in a very dark tunnel of understanding.

Carmel,

When Robert had his surgery it was onside then a week later the other side after the 1st surgery he was out of the hospital after 3 days, after the second surgery it was 5 days. he had the vomiting and eating less as well. However he hadnt had a stroke prior to surgery that may delay release I am not sure. Also as Jill (stanford)told me it was 2 major traumas in a week dont expect them to being doing hand springs down the hall. Also Robert didnot tolerate the Steroids well at all they keep him from sleeping well and made him very emotional

Ahhh ..okay.
Well at this time they haven't seen anyside of this on the other side. They will do regular testing about every 6 months to start and then once a year to watch for it.
I can't imagine doing this twise within a few days of each other.
I'd be so happy to think we'll get home in 5 days. It's funny when she first came in with her stroke i couldn't ever imagine leaving the safety net of the hospital and having the doctors and nurses. Now ..I can't WAIT to bring her home ....of course we expect her to rest and lay and watch movies and take it easy for some time ..but to be here to put in a load of laundry, to tidy the house, make sure the dogs are ripping apart the garbage, spend time with our other children ..yes ..were all ready to have her home.

We still don't know if they will want to transfer her to the rehabilitation hospital ( Glen Rose ) as an out patient. We'll wait and see what there plan is for that for the future. We hope it's something they'll maybe consider to do a couple times a week instead of daily ..we'd like to see her be able to return to school before the year ends. Not as much for acedemic reasons as to be with her peers. I think they do the BEST speech thearpy while playing with each other.

I'll let u know how it goes ...take care
Thank u

I am glad Mike is doing good. The days will get better, it just takes time. I thought my recovery was never going to end. I too only had one side operated on. After surgery I was thanking God that I didn't have to go through another side of surgery. Also, speaking from experience, it is nice to recover in your own home. It's been almost 15 months since my surgery and I remember the nauseated feeling post op like it was yesterday. That too went away along with the jaw pain. Give her hugs and keep us posted.
