Hey Jamie-Lee

Great news that you're seeing someone with mm experience. Others who have actually had the operation themselves will answer your specific questions better than my educated guesswork.

Hospital Stay: Depending on whether you have one or two sides done, but I'd say expect a week after surgery per side. This really is dependant on the individual.

Pain: I'm sure there's pain, but there are also good pain meds to help you through.

Types of Med: You're already on aspirin and possibly an anti-seizure med for awhile. This really depends on your situation.

Dangers: It is brain surgery afterall, so there is always potential for a myriad of dangers, but experienced surgeons these days perform miracles.

Since I have yet to hear back from Standford. But I will let you know how it went when its done.

The surgery takes any where from 5 to 7 hours to complete. Only 3 hours of that is the actually surgery, the rest is prep time, but you are still under anesthesia for 5 - 7 hours.
There is pain afterwords, but it is not as bad as birthing labor. You will have a headache for awhile. It feels like someone hit you on the side of your head with a baseball bat. The pain medication that is given will keep this to a minimum. The worst of the pain in only for the first 24 hours. After that it is just a headache. I was off the heavy duty IV pain meds by the day after surgery and was only taking oral medication maybe twice a day.
The side of your head will swell some and you may have a black eye on that side. If you wear glasses then you will not be able to wear them for a week or two after surgery. The arm of the glasses will put too much pressure on the surgery site which can cause problems. You can always remove the arm of your glasses, but if you are having surgery on both sides you can not wear glasses with no arms. I would recommend contacts if you have them or can get them.
Most doctors like to keep you in the hospital for 4-6 days after surgery. Sometimes longer depending on if you are having both sides done.
Most people are up and out of bed the day after surgery by lunch time. Getting up and walking is good for you after surgery. By then you should just have a headache, the pain should be much better after 24 hours. I want you to be prepared, the first night after surgery is tuff, some people get sick from the anesthesia or pain medications and have nausea and vomiting, others just have the pain. Anyway you look at it, the first night is a long one, but i promise you, if all goes well you will feel much better by morning.

I think it's important to note that every case and surgery is different. You can’t say what happened to one will be the same for another. Some come through it better than others. There are so many different factors involved with each individual. Some people have said they’ve had dental work that was far worse, yet some others have said they struggled a bit more. DJ was sitting up in bed in ICU with his Laptop putting this website together on the same day after one of his surgeries, so you gotta know it’s not the same for everyone. A lot depends on YOU, your doctor, the staff, the type of surgery, etc. Like I said before, so many different factors are involved. As far as the danger, like any other medical procedure, including dental, tonsils, whatever, there are risks ...your doctor will go over all of this with you. You have to stay positive and know that surgery is the best option with MMD, and you’re going through all this so you’ll have a long, happy, healthy life. We’ll be with you all the way wherever your journey takes you.
