Coronary Artery Disease and Moya Moya
Aug 14th, 2009 at 9:22pm

I apologize if this has been brought up before, but I was diagnosed with stage four Moya Moya in 1996, had surgeries, and came down with coronary artery disease a few years ago. Last week I had my fifth stent put in my heart. Has anyone heard of a correlation between Moya Moya and narrowing coronary arteries? My diet has already been heart-healthy, and I've lost 30 pounds and exercise daily for the last five months. My cardiologist says it's genetic, but I wonder if there is something else at play, i.e. Moya Moya. Any help is appreciated.

Read this thread on here:

I think you will find it pretty interesting to say the least.  If you can watch the part of the sypposium that's talked about in the thread and see if you can get into the gentic testing.

I was first diagnosed with coronary artery disease in 1998. I was told by my cardiologist that it is hereditary. I lost my brother and mother from this disease. In 2002 I had a stroke and fould I had moyamoya. My heart disease is not as severe as yours but I have to have an echocardiogram every six months. I had indirect bypass surgery for mm in 2003. I also feel the same as you. There is a connection.

Just wondering - I didn't know there were stages of moyamoya.  What are the stages?

Angiographical stages were classified by the criteria of Suzuki and Takaku.  I believe they are defined by the proliferation of the collateral vessels, and in the 4th stage the vessels start to disappear???  It's been along time since I read up on that topic.  Someone else could probably explain it much better, but I have definitely come across that in my review of the research.

I was part of a genetic study by University of Texas, but they stopped contact with me.

I still have to send my stuff back to them. I can't seem to get us all together to get this done.  I was told I could call them and ask if they found the genetic markers for MM????  I'm still trying to get it all in to them.

I ended up calling the genetic counselor for the study and she said I was still part of it and haven't been contacted because I didn't have the genes they had found they thought had to do with MM.

Hey, guess what? I'm going in for another coronary angiogram and stent or stents on Tuesday, 23 February. My mom turns 88 the next day. Talk about being pissed off! I have done everything they said, and apparently it doesn't matter. Sooooo frustrated.

Eve,

I have to say that your post brought a tear to my eye.  Does anyone else have children who have been diagnosed with MM?  I just never thought of the possibility of having grandchildren with MM -- but then that may also be because I am not (quite) at the grandchildren stage.

Kimber - mom to Matthew, 17, three strokes due to moyamoya at age 7 and single kidney due to renal artery stenosis, Laura, 22, Jacob, 14, and Kay, 10.

Sorry for bringing this up yet again, but I'm hospital-bound for another angiogram and probably another stent or two the day after tomorrow. The blood flow on the left side of my heart is severely limited, according to a nuclear stress test I had a few days ago. I always thought Moya Moya would kill me eventually, as in massive stroke like my brother, but I have a suspicion that it's attacking my heart.

My toughts are with you. Paula has also MM, aorta coartaction, and mitral valve dysplasia and I have been thinking about the possibility of having also coronary artery disease. What your symptoms are? Paula complained about chest pain two weeks ago, and again, all this situation is exhausting me ...

All the best,

Paula

Just thought that I would mention that my husband has early onset of heart disease.  Two heart attacks by 45 years and 3 stints.  My daughter was diagnosed with moyamoya in March 2010 and they are doing genetic testing on both of them to see if there is a relationship with early onset of heart disease and moyamoya.  This is being done at Standford University Medical Center.

My daughter was nuclear stress tested in February to check coronary arteries and they were fine.

Hi Corinne,

Thank you very much for your post. I'm very glad with Linsdley recovery; she is an inspiration to all of us. Could you please explain me what is done with nuclear stress test? I spoke to the cardiologist and he said that the only test to check the coronary arteries was an arteriogram .....

All the best. Paula

Nuclear stress test measures blood flow through the coronary arteries, by injecting radioactive isotope and taking pictures with an imaging device, sorta like an xray. They found no blockahges this time and sent me home today.
