weaning off seizure meds?
Aug 21st, 2009 at 12:32am

Hello friends, I just got some good news. Adriana has been seizure free almost 20 months. Her neurologist wants to start weaning her slowly off of Keppra. She has had an in direct bypass done on both sides off her brain and has had no strokes since. She has had 4 strokes and only had seizures during her strokes. She has never just had a seizure. Has anyone dealt with this yourself or with a family member with MM? I thought it was great news just because I know that the seizure meds can hinder there development and behavior. She does have brain damage and even damage can cause seizures or seizure like activity. This may sound silly but is everyone with MM on seizure meds? Is it something they should always take like the aspirin? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Danielle

Danielle,
I was on Topamax an antisezure med but for my migraines but i have weaned off of them and now take an "as needed" migraine medication. Adriana may still have headachs so please watch her when you are weaning off the medication. But if the neurologest recomends it then she has a high chance of being fine from seizures. I take 81mg of Asprin but there are others who don't or take more. It is totaly an individgual thing. It depends on how well the surgery lets the blood flow around so I would talk to your neuologest about the asprin regiment.
I hope this helps.

Becky, Adriana takes a half of low dose aspirin a day. I think the aspirin regiment is good. Sorry, I did not know that some MMers don't take aspirin. That is very interesting to me. I'm still learning. I was also surprised that you took a seizure med to help with migraines. Now that we are weaning her off I am going to call the neurologist and ask about that. So she may need something else if she is having migraines. Thank you so much for the advice.

If any one has any children with MM and has weaned them off seizure meds I would love to hear how it went. Did they have any seizures after no more medication? Also did they have migraines after weaning? I know that every case is different, just wanted to hear other story's. I have looked up weaning off seizure meds in children with epilepsy but found nothing on people with MM. Thanks, Danielle

Hi Danielle,
my son who is now 9 was weaned off his seizure medication about a year and a half after both surgeries (EDAS). Same as your daughter he only had a seizure during a stroke. The weaning off went very well and we started noticing a lot of positive changes with learning at school. The teachers noticed that he wasn't as tired anymore and more alert. So far he hasn't had any seizures and it has been over a year since we stopped the medicine. He still has occasional migraines but he had them under seizure medicine as well. He now only takes a baby aspirin a day and medication to lower his blood pressure.  We are glad we made the decision along with the neurologist to stop the medicine.
I hope this helps and that all goes well with your daughter.
Take care!
