Post Surgery Medication
Aug 29th, 2009 at 1:36pm

I had my STA-MCA indirect bypass in March 2008. Since then, I have been on Aggrenox only. I recently had my follow up angiogram. I wonder what others who are post op are taking for medication? Is this normal? What are others taking? Does it help? Have you tried other medications first?

Hi,
I'll soon be two years from my STA/MCAs. I was on Aggrenox before my surgeries. Dr. Steinberg took me off of that and replaced it with 325mg of aspirin daily. I had high blood pressure prior to surgeries and now sometime have it, so occasionally have needed to take a tiny amount of BP medication. That's it other than a lot of vitamin supplements that I've chosen to take. A multi-vitamin, Folic Acid (supposed to aid in the growth of blood vessels), Vitamin B12, Vitamin D3, Fish Oil with Borage, and CoQ10.
Dose it help? I'm not sure. I had a single TIA in February whidh lead to another SPECT in May. I was told the SPECT showed the blood flow was better than a year earlier. I feel great and have plenty of energy and haven't had another TIA.

I just TODAY noticed your reply. I apparently am not getting reply emails. I had a follow up with my nuero today. My nuero actually moved out of state and I am now going to a stroke specialist. I asked him if aggrenox was the best thing for me to take and he said he had a LOT of MMD patients and had aggrenox was best (who knows!). What is funny when you talk about BP is that I am currently on 10 MG of a calcium blocker based BP medicine daily for high blood pressure. I just read a post of a lot of people saying post surgery they had low BP.

Quick question - did you choose the other vitamins because of research you did on Moya Moya and what it does to help for brain/nuero functions? I take multi and folic acid.

My daughter also goes to a stroke clinic, 11 month post-op and her DR says only aspirin is needed. He explained that it is a delimma. If she takes an anticoagulant, then with the tiny MM vessels, they could break and bleed causing a hemorrhagic stroke, or not take the anticoag and have a blood clot stroke. She will always be at risk. Aspirin is an anticoagulant but only a mild one.
My daughter also takes neurontin to control headaches, keppra for seizure control, multivitamin, lipitor for cholesterol and midodrine to keep her BP up.

I wonder what role blood pressure and cholestrol really plays with MM? Right now, I have border line high cholestrol and am on medication for high blood pressure. Is your daughter on medication for high cholestrol?

Also, a lot of people are saying LOW blood pressure after surgery?

What a strange, unique disease.

1 week post-op my daughter had a stroke when they went to wean her BP med down. She has run low BP since and we are afraid to take her off the med. She functions better with her BP up also. She does run slightly high on cholesterol so they are controling that with the lipitor. Very strange disease, which i will never understand!!

On the contrary… As I understand it with my niece and from research, MM patients may require higher than normal blood pressures, so anti-hypertensive therapy is not always recommended, but if you have been diagnosed with high blood pressure, a MM specialist or neurosurgeon familiar enough with this disease should monitor or plan a treatment to regulate it for that specific case, to keep it at a high normal.

As far as medication after surgery, that varies patient to patient, due to seizures and other associated problems, but usually all MM patients are on aspirin for the rest of their lives. It promotes flow through the grafts.

My stroke specialist gave me a prescriptions for aggrenox and said it would help collateral vessels grow around the blockage.  When I found out it was 130 a month for this medication I told him to find something else!!  He suggested 325 aspirin daily.  I then found out that aggrenox is dipyridamole and ASPIRIN of all things.  I should note that my stroke was a watershed stroke (clot) and not a bleed, which would make a difference for people.
