Blood Pressure
Sep 2nd, 2009 at 5:22pm

I had my surgery in 2008 and was wondering if anyone else has trouble keeping their blood pressure up? I find that I now have low blood pressure(low for my graft) I am usually at 110/70 and feel quite badly. I also seem to have a very fast pulse, in 90's to 100's. I get clean bills of health from my primary doctor and Stanford tells me to stay hydrated etc...I walk, eat right, drink lots of water. Any tips?

Hi bzt and welcome to the MM Family.

My brother Cubbie has MM and was having TIAs and seizure acitivty earlier this year. He went back to Stanford for a complete check up and discovered his blood pressure was too low for him (about the same reading as your BP reading) and as a result, blood was not pumping as it should through the right bypass. He too stays hydrated and walks everyday and uses a treadmill and stationary bike for exercise.

It has been difficult for him to get his blood pressure up to an acceptable level and maintain it but he has managed to get it up over the last few months by monitoring his blood pressure several times a day and adjusting his BP medicine dosage and changing blood pressure meds with the help of his local doctor.

It seems that regulating and balancing BP is very delicate and different for each individual. I hope you find answers to bringing your BP to an acceptable level and that you soon wil feel better.

I am not on blood pressure medication, so I may have to go that route. I do have a machine that I use to monitor, but it's also the racing pulse that will not go under the 90's and gets into the 100's, while I am doing nothing. My doctor is stumped, which is usualy when I look to Stanford for answers..Thanks, Blonnie

Hey, Blonnie -
Good to see you posting here. Sorry though that your blood pressure is too low and your pulse rate is up. I usually have to work to keep my BP lower. I read that eating salty foods and drinking MORE water often helps. If you eat a bag of potato chips, you're to want a lot of water.
Has a cardiologist checked out your heart to make sure that all is well?

Hi Blonnie,
Kim gave you good advice to see a cardiologist. I had my mm surgery in 2003 and one year later suffered a cardiac arrest. I had a defibrillator put in one day later. It regulates my heart rate and will shock me if my heart rate get to high. I also have a home monitor that reads my heart rate once a week. Please see a cardiologist. You may be able to prevent what happened to me with meds.

My daughter had her surgeries in Nov 2008 and has been on BP med to keep her BP up ever since. They tried to wean her off the meds 1 week after surgery on the 1st side and thats when she had a stroke at the hospital. I would just rather keep her on it, dont like the risk without it. She takes medication 3 times a day called Midodrine. Her BP on the meds are usually about 110/70. She hasnt felt good since her surgeries but she has had several strokes too and is in a Nursing Home/ Rehab hospital. She will have an angio on the 23rd. Hoping her grafts are working well!

Thanks for all the responses everyone. I will see a cardiologist, as the one I saw told me the opposite advice that Steinbergs office tells me-don't drink too much water, low blood pressure good etc...
Is hard to find doctors educated to deal with more than one problem!!

Am glad that you are going to see a cardiologist. I have been fighting high bp since 1998. Even after my bypass surgery in 2003. Then I was told by my cardiologist that I have heart disease. That may be why you are getting opposite advice. I am lucky to have doctors who are both familiar with mm and cardiology.

My cardiologist told me recently that with seeing 200 patients a week for 30 years I am still his only one with MM.

Mayhem,  I guess I am pretty lucky to have a local cardiologist who I see every six months and several at the University of Iowa Hospitals once a year.
