Anyone with Moya Moya had children?
Oct 7th, 2009 at 9:03pm

I had an appointment with my nuerologist today and he was talking to me about Moya Moya and my journey to find good birth control for the time being (my husband and I got married 1/2009 and are not ready for children yet). He told me in so many words or less, "I am not even sure if children will ever really work for you since you have Moya Moya"

This was really upseting and really got me thinking. I did some google searching but could not find anything easily. Are there any adult patients who have MM who have had surgery, are on medication and have successfully given birth to children? If so, what medications were you on? Did you have to come off of them before giving birth? How did that work? How difficult was it? What did your nuerologist say? What do you suggest?

I would  really like to have one child myself, naturally. Please help. Any feedback would be helpful.

My thoughts were that I would need to get off certain medications before giving birth/2nd trimester etc. Thanks for any and all help.

Hi

My research indicated that pregnancy and child birth after surgery is not a problem. PM me your email address and I'll send you some literature from Dr Steinberg; it's not much but it certainly affirms what I've said.

Moyamoya won't stop you from having babies.

Stay strong

I have a happy, healthy son.  I was diagnosed in 1980 with MM after a brain haemorrhage (age 11) and without any further problems decided to start a family in 2002.  I did not discuss my decision with a neurologist as I had been signed off (age 17) as no further action was available to me and I did not have any problems.  At the start of my second trimester I had my second haemorrhage, without warning.  I recovered fully and gave birth in 2003 to a healthy son by Caesarean Section and I was able to feed him myself without any problems.  Due to my unusual case I have been advised against any more children.  I have always been told not to take any form of anti coagulant, including aspirin and the Pill which I have kept off and surgery was not an option for me but had been told that pregnance wouldn't be a problem for me.  I don't know if my history helps but you can contact me if you need to but talk it through with you neurologist, different people have different responses to pregnancy hence the confusing answers to your google search.

It is NOT as cut and dry as the above post implies. MM can in fact have dangerous risks with pregnancy. Every case of MM is different with MANY concerns before you could possibly make that call. That's a call for an experienced MM physician who knows your particular case to say. I certainly understand why your Neuro may have suggested a danger with pregnancy. I’ve read where it is in fact very dangerous to get pregnant and deliver a baby with MMD if you haven’t had successful treatment, but with successful treatment (successful surgeries on both sides) many patients here have gotten pregnant and had babies and are doing wonderful. They did great because their pregnancy was monitored by MM experienced doctors AFTER their successful treatment. Most every MM patient I’ve ever spoken with though, said that C-Section had to be the method of delivery, as they won't allow any pressure on the brain as with a regular delivery. They also had to have a doctor that specializes in high-risk pregnancies, and one that’s familiar with MMD. There were also members here who said that anesthesia during their C-section was a very important concern (depends on your specific case) so the anesthesiologist should also be familiar with MMD, because certain anesthesia cannot be administered with anything that constricts the vessels or increases blood pressure like some do. Plus, they say your blood circulation increases normally with pregnancy, so having MMD; you can see the need of a “high-risk pregnancy physician” with these special concerns for special care to help avoid any chance of a possible risk of hemorrhage or stroke.

Please note, even though other MM patients had successful pregnancies after their surgery, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s safe in your particular case. We don’t know your specifics, so we can't make that call. There could be additional concerns or other underlying problems we don’t know about in your case. For example, some MM patients are at a higher risk of forming a brain aneurysm. I’ve spoken to a few members here who could not get pregnant for that reason alone, while others had problems with their blood pressure and were advised against getting pregnant due to the dangers, so it’s not a cut and dry case of saying it’s safe for everyone. There are individual factors that should be taken into consideration and again, why we always advise an EXPERIENCED MM Neurosurgeon to say whether it’s safe in your case or not.

On another note… when you mentioned finding a good birth control, I hope you know that birth control pills are usually forbidden to a MM patient due to the dangerous risks.

I admire the fact that you are researching your questions. That’s very wise. Arming yourself with knowledge saves lives when dealing with a rare disease and when there is just such a huge lack of knowledge and understanding about this disease throughout most of the medical profession.

Good luck! You’ll be in my thoughts and prayers.

Mar

I did some research last night and I think I found what information you are talking about on Dr. Steinberg's website about how MM patients having children is "not an issue".

I also found other articles online that pretty much state that MM patients have very high risk pregnancies for many different reasons like the ones Mar, you list.

I was on the birth control pill before and after my TIA's and surgery. I have some other issues that kept me from getting an IUD. I actually had an IUD inserted yesterday because my pelvic pain specialist, gyno and nuero finally got together and came to a conclusion on what was best for my entire body. I should be off birth control by Sunday, if the IUD takes well. I have been told that I need to "get off of the birth control pill if possible" and I took that jump yesterday. It literally took 18 months to get all doctors on the same page.

My ObGYN talked to my Neuro and said there was a low dose Progestergen Only pill. Then I was forgetting to take my pill when I went off a daily migrane supressent so I had an IUD put in. I may have to have a C-section when I get pregnet. My friend who does not have MM got the same IUD as I did and it took her 6 months after it was removed to get pregnet but my OBGyN said I should be able to get pregnet after my first period with it removed.
Hope this helps,
Becky

Both my children are grown so I don't have the concern about "wanting" a child...but the exact opposite...preventing pregnancy.  I have been told that anyone with MMD should not be on birth control pills.  I was told the only option is an IUD...and even that requires some research as the more modern IUD's contain hormones which should be avoided.  I was told an old fashioned copper IUD was my only option for pregnancy prevention, but you would have to confirm that with your MM doctor.  I was told no BC pills after having a stroke, prior to MM diagnosis, by several stroke specialists.  Your situation may be different.  In the end, my partner had a procedure so I would not have to worry about it.  This would not work for you as you hope to have a child someday.  Sorry I am not more helpful, I just wanted to let you know that you should be leary of BC methods and do your research.

Its funny that "normal" non MM people do not understand the challenge. They tell you just to take birth control pills and you explain that you can not and they do not understand why! Smiley

I was taking the low dose (Mirconor). Its the safest birth control PILL option for MM but still not a good option of birth control, so I chose the IUD. Yes, my husband and I do want to have children down the road.

Its frustating that since MM is so rare, there is not much research or anything showing exactly what you need to do or how to handle a MM pregnancy, which I can only assume would be pretty "high risk".

Hi L,

I just had my surgeries in December '08 at the age of 29 (30 now), with no children to date, but still desired.  I've been told by my diagnosing neurosurgeon and follow-up neurologist that pregnancy is safe and should be fine (although regular monitoring and having a plan with your neuro is a good idea).  I've also been told the pill is not a good option due to the increased risk of stroke, and that a lot of IUDs contain the same hormones as the pill, although it seems you've done your research and are settled for the best plan for you.  I've also been advised to have a C-section when the time comes, as to not encourage a hemmorhage while pushing.  Finally, since I personally haven't hit my annual angiogram yet, I've been advised not to conceive until after the procedure.  But it seems to vary case-by-case!  I'd definitely recommend the monitoring though.  If children is what you want, get a second opinion from another neurologist!

Best of luck, and hope this helps!

A woman I know with MM who used to post on here had one baby before she was diagnosed (by c-section luckily for other reasons) and then a couple of years after her surgeries she had another beautiful baby, by c-section again and with the aid of a high-risk pregnancy team.. She had no problems at all..

Admittedly when I was diagnosed and had my surgeries (woah 4 years ago!!) having children was the last thing on my mind but it certainly is up there at the moment. On the cards soon hopefully! Smiley

I had a baby two years ago.  During the pregnacy had was on bed rest the last two months bc my BP was out of control. However I had high BP way before that.  I had a vaginal birth, that went very fast!! The dr's said I pushed too hard! lol After I had my son I started having wierd symptoms occuring.  Almost a year later I finally  got Diagnosed with MM. So I dont no if the stress of the pregnancy made my MM progress but I no I felt fine until I had him.  Now, I say I "felt" fine but  I have had problems as a child that no one else did.  Such as getting migranes starting at the age of 6. The  BP dx at age 9. And then at age 20 i had episodes where my left side (arm, face,) when numb and limb and I couldnt talk.... happened more then once and it went diagnosed as a viral infection!! They never did any scans on my head. So all this being said, we have a feeling I have had (MM) for a long time. Just getting diagnosed at age 28. I'll be 29 next month. I had my surgery a month ago.  Hopefully my 6 month checkup will be good!  I too have a copper IUD.  WIth my dx of MM I was very sad bc I assumed it meant I would never have baby number 2.  But from what I've read from standford and other things, it sounds like having a baby is not totally out of the question. But  I dont know, for me Im almost at the point now where I just dont want to take a chance to make it worse.   Im just so thankful I at least have one child to love!!   I'll just have to see what the future holds!

I thought I would post my experience on here. I have had two children prior to the diagnosis of MMD. Looking back at medical records I indeed had MMD prior to both pregnancies it was just not diagnosed. My children are almost 5 and 3. I however had them both c-section because the neuro I was seeing at the time thought I had an aneurysm. As others have said each case of MMD is different and the decision and the care of pregnancy is different. My body made it through both pregnancies just fine however. I'm undecided on whether I want any future children but will leave that option open. My surgery was in 2/2008. I hope sharing this helps some.
