Aspirin intake
Dec 5th, 2009 at 3:44pm

I know that we are suppose to take aspirin after our surgeries to help keep the blood thinned but it seems to be upsetting my stomach something awful, I dont know if it is nerves because I am going through alot of personal issues right now or what but do you think it would be ok to lower the level of aspirin I am taking (325 mg) or just stopping for awhile all together just till my stomach settles down? I am taking Topamax to help with the headache issues...

Do you take enteric-coated aspirin?

Aspirin can be irratating if taken with coffee or alcohol. It's better to take aspirin with a meal or with a glass of milk or even an antacid.

Depending on the severity of your discomfort, you might want to discuss your symptoms with your doctor.

Hope you get some relief soon.

Kathy,

Not a good idea to change your aspirin regimen without your doctor's blessing.  We had a terrible time following Tara's surgeries, as the aspirin really bothered her, too.  Tried enteric, different times of the day, always with food, etc., but nothing worked.  After months of playing around with it, we finally tried her taking 2 baby aspirin in the morning and 2 in the evening, and that was successful.  She continues with that same regimen today.

I'm sorry you're uncomfortable, and hope you can find something that works for you, without increasing your stroke risk.

A few soda crackers and a 1/2 a cup of milk seem to help me.  Although the idea of taking more of the baby aspirin sounds wonderful too.  I wouldn't recommend to stop at all.  Although there are days I have forgotten (MM memory) to take my aspirin and I haven't dropped over.  I now just keep them out on the counter so I don't forget.

Kathy,

It could also be your Topamax upsetting your stomach. It has a tendency to do that. I know it makes me sick to my stomach to eat and I have to eat small foods or drink protein shakes because of the dosage of Topamax I am on. However it works wonders for my headaches so I have learned many tricks to battle the stomach issues and other side effects. Everybody is different though. For me, Aspirin doesn't upset my stomach and the Topamax does. I don't know if this helps but I thought I would share my experience.
