Botox

Kathleen saw the physiatrist today to check her leg braces. She wears a KAFO on her left and an AFO on her right cince the strokes. We talked about her increased tone in her left ankle.(this is from the strokes)It's been progressively getting so tight I have a hard time stretching it and getting it into her brace. We're now faced with doing Botox injections. I'm not crazy about the idea but the alternative isn't so great either. If we don't do this it will get worse and eventually the only "fix" would be heel cord lengthening surgery. The injections will be done under anesthesia in the hospital. They will need to first get clearance from her neurosurgeon in Boston for the specific concerns with anesthesia and moyamoya. The injections should last about 4 months and then we do it again. How about the concerns with anesthesia and moyamoya? Any input is appreciated.Has anyone done these injections for spasticity from their strokes? Gosh it's always something.....

Hi Mary Grace,
My Daughter had to have Botox done in both of her legs due to the tone and spasticity she was having her her feet and ankles. When we came in to the hospital her feet were at
-70 and we couldnn't get them to neutral. With a combo of the botox and her AFOs she is now back to neutral. I definitely had my reservations but I was impressed how well the two worked together. Hope all goes well in whatever you decide.

Thank you so much for your input. It helps to ehar that this helped. Did you daughter have anesthesia and did they have particular conceners about the anesthesia and moyamoya? How often did your daughter have these injections?

So far she has only had to have the injections once. They did have to do about four shots into each leg but the process was pretty quick. They didn't give her any anesthesia but did put on some cream that numbed the injection site and that seemed to help. so I am not sure as far as concerns between moyamoya and anesthesia. She has had some other procedures done that did require it though and I never heard any concerns. Have you been told there should be? I would like to know as well if that is an issue to be watching out for.
