Angiogram and severe bleeding
Nov 15th, 2010 at 6:05am

Hi all, we just came back from appointment with neurosurgeon and was told Leonie will do angiogram within next two weeks.

I have no idea what the whole process will be like as her neurosurgeon told us there is a slight chance for getting another stroke, which really scared us:(

I got couple of questions for asking you guys: Smiley

1.As Leonie is taking Aspirin for two months already, is it still OK doing Angiogram without stopping taking Aspirin? My understanding is Aspirin could cause severe bleeding.

2. What the whole process will be like? I was told Leonie will be put into sleep during the whole process. Is there any thing we need to know except that?

3. Does Leonie feel sick after doing angiogram or she will  get back to normal when she is awake from anesthesia?

Anything I still miss out?

UndecidedA worried mum-Helen

Helen,
1) Depends on the dose of asprin. I was on 81mg and was fine not stoping.

2) Yes it is like sleeping. they give you a drug that "knocks' you out. As far as the process I prefer angios to MRA which is the MRI with angio dye. Angios you will have a weight and slight movement restrictions while the puncher stie heals. The day of the angio after it is a good day to lounge around, and no lifting over 5lbs. for a week after I beleive not excersizing and lifting of 20lbs. after that i think it is all clear.

3)In my experence I didn't get "sick" but all I wanted to do was watch TV or play my viedo games.

Agian I want to express this is my experence and may not be the restrictions Leonie will have.
Hope this helps ,
Becky

Helen those are great questions. Kathleen's angio was 8 yrs ago so things do change a bit. But from our experience she was taken off asprin (I think it depends on the Dr. and his experiences). She had anesthesia for the angio.  She also had to stay in recovery for several hours staying pretty still in bed. They had videos for her to watch and I don't think she really wanted to get up and play anyway. We traveled for her angio to Boston and they asked that we stay the night nearby and not drive home the same day. Everything went smooth and she was up and going the next morning. There is a risk but it's a very neccessary test and If the team of Dr.'s and anesthesiologists are familiar with MM they will keep a close eye on the risk factors. Keep us posted and ask away if you have anymore questions. One more thing Kathleen was 5 yrs old, I don't know if there is different protocol for different ages.

I have had one angio before MM surgery, and due to have another 12-28-10 to check revascularazation progress.  My personal experience was that I was awake, with some sedation, but was still able to follow commands such a "hold your breath", etc.  The angio probably took 1-1/2, including prep time   Aterwards, I was taken to recovery, where they applied pressure and I had to lie flat for several hours.  I was given a sandwich & drink, and finally allowed to leave.
I took it really easy rest of day, and did no lifting for a week or so.  As for the aspirin question, I did have to stop my 81mg dosage, about a week prior to angio.....and would think they might discontinue, but I guess every doctor/hospital has different requirements.  Best of luck, God bless!

I'll contact with Leonie's neurosurgeon to confirm whether Leonie will continue or stop taking Aspirin when doing Angiogram. Tongue

When I had my Angiogram I was on Plavix and Asprin.  I belive that they prefer to do it without blood thinners... but depending on the circimstances if the risk of a stroke is higher than the risk of bleeding they work with.  I also was awake for mine (but they did givve me somthing that made me dreary.. for the pain I think).  For me during the whole test the team talked to me and I could talk back.  They were also listening music and let me pick what kind.  They worked very well at helping me relax during the procedure. During the test you get tons of weird sensations from the dye.  They warned me about them.  I wouldnt'  be suprised if young children are sedated becuase of these odd seseastions.  Becuase I was on the blood thinners.  I had to lie perfectly still for 2 hours after the procedure with a nurse holding a bandage with pressure on it for the first hour afterwards.  I was very suprised at how soar I was after the test and the next day.  I just stayed in the bed and watched TV.  The next morning I had to get up and meet with the surgen... I was sorta limping but after my mom and I meet the surgen we had three hours before we could check into the hotel.  We went to a museum and I had to sit a lot but I made it those three hours and enjoyed my time with my mom.  After we made it to the hotel I was out though Smiley  I hope all goes well for your daughter!

I was on 81mg asprin for about 8 months(after 2nd surgery) when I had my checked up Angio, and I did have problem on bleeding. It was a sever bleeding, but the insertion point of the angio just couldn't stop dripping blood for about 2 hours when I was still in recovery room.  Then I passed out for a short 1 or 2 minutes.  At the end, the nurse has to use a crawbar look like plastic bar to press and hold the little open hole to eventually stop bleeding.  I didn't really loss much blood, it's just the whole speculation of "not being able to stop the bleeding" scared me a little bit.

Last month I also have a small surgery (unrelated to MMD) and I also bleed more than it suppose to.

I guess at the end, taking asprin long term do have some side effects, but for the sake of treating my lovely MMD, I don't have any other choices but just suck it up.

Hi all, thank you so much for your experiences , which really help us a lot.

I just wanna  update for Leonie's angiogram:

She did on 19 Nov,which was last Friday. She had solid food done before 7 in the morning and between 7 to 11 am we just gave her water to make her hydrate.

She was called to do angiogram at 11 am and the angiogram started around 1.30pm. She was put into sleep by general anesthesia. We were asked to collected her in recovery room around 3.45pm. And I saw little Leonie was sort of sleepy.

It looked good at that stage and we even asked when we could go home. However, we were told we need to stay overnight just in case.

It finally turned out the doctor's decision is quite right. because at 8.30pm when Leonie was wake up from her little snap, she got high fever around 38.5 degree and then suddenly she was very very sick with her whole body shaking and her right hands weakness. I was so upset at that time and asked for emergency help from nurse. The response from nurse really disappointed me. What they could do was to pager to paediatric doctor and then did nothing afterwards Cry
The doctor finally came and checked Leonie's condition. she was not sure what had happened to her weakness of her right part of body, which the answer I was not satisfied.

(to be continued)

The nurse was required to give Leonie Panadol to reduce her temperature, which was good at least they did something to prevent the condition went worse.

After one hour later taking Panadol, my poor baby did mini strokes twice, which affected her right hands straight away and she could not turn right, could not suck her right hand.

The doctor shown up again and did a check. However, we were still not clear what's going on.

Luckily, Leonie fall asleep finally at around 12.45am. when she was awake, she got temperature checked around 36.7 degree, which was really good. I was so relived Smiley

We've been in hospital for two days without knowing what happened exactly to Little Leonie's mini strokes. Fortunately, those mini strokes did not damage her right part body as we could tell she has picked up the right part of  function quickly, which was much more quick recovery than last time.

Has anyone here experienced mini strokes after angiogram? Cry

I'm glad your daughter's doing better. It's really hard when your not gettting answers.   At my daughter's one year check they did an angio. We were with her in recovery, she was a bit restless and was given morphine. Usually she would wake up very quickly after anesthesia but she was not waking up. We were supposed to be able to leave by 4:00. Hour after hour went by and she was not waking up. Finally around 6 or 7 they paged her neurosurgeon. He came later that noght and she still had not waken up. He admitted her imediatly. She woke up slowly the next morning but was very very weak for days. They never figured out what caused this. It was pretty scary though. Many prayers that your daughter continues to recover quickly.

My daughther is also scheduled to have an angiogram done but I have been holding off due to fear of her having another stroke. The last two times they have put her under she has ended up having yet another stroke. To this date she has now had 6. Anyone else with similiar situation or concerns? I know that she needs to have this procudure done but I am very scared to do it at this point.

I am so sorry that this happened to Leonie.  I know how difficult it is when you want answers but the people you expect to have them, have none.

It seems a good sign that her right side function has retuned to seemingly normal so quickly.

@lshafer - My daughter has not experienced strokes/tia after either of her angios (first was diagnostic, 2nd was her 1-yr post surgery follow-up on 10/5/10).

When my daughter has required anesthesia, her neurosurgeon insists that the anesthesiologist be trained in what she refers to as "moyamoya precautions" for anesthesia.  I don't know if this has contributed to her lack of experiencing strokes/tia post-angio, but if you'd like for me to share with you what her doc considers to be the precautions, please send me a private message, either here or at yunnanbaby @ gmail.com and I'll be happy to share them with you privately so you can discuss with your daughter's medical team to see if they're appropriate for her.

Best regards,

Jennifer
