3 Year Old, stroke following surgery
May 13th, 2011 at 1:38pm

Hi everyone, I am new but have been following the post for a while and think about you all quite a bit.  Our 3 year old son had surgery with Dr. Scott in November of last year (bi-lateral).  He has been doing great.  He had a follow up MRI/MRA this week and it looks like the side that was not operated on still has good blood flow, but he has had more stroke activity on the by-pass side.  This was news to us as he seems fine.  He had a couple of strokes prior to surgery and we have not seen any additional symptoms.  He did take a couple of days to fully "wake up" from surgery and seemed to regress a bit afterwards, but in a few weeks he was back to his old self.  We are waiting to hear from Dr. Scott, but I was wondering if anyone else has had this happen.  I know the surgery takes 6 to 12 months to take effect, so I am hoping this new stroke happened shortly after surgery and he will not have any more.
Any thoughts?  As an aside, he also has renal artery stenosis.  I have seen some others with that condition as well.

Hi! My first thoughts were that maybe he had his stroke right after surgery..........did they do a CT scan within 24 hrs fo surgery......ours did, I believe. My daughter, now age 10 had 2 surgeries at age 6 and 8....both sides.......no strokes prior, but a stroke after each surgery..........the first within 12 hours after the first surgery, the 2nd approx. 5 days post surgery--hers were the right caudate internal capsule. She has recovered amazingly well, some left side weakness in her fingers..........a little difficult with swallowing thin liiquids, a bit of hypernasal speech.......though they do not know if this was related to moyamoy for sure. She also had a seizure just prior to her first stroke, so is on Tegretol for seizures and aspirin for stroke risk.  I hope your child continues to heal well!
-young children are very resilient........amazes me.....

Thanks Dawn.  Glad to hear your daughter is doing well.  My husband and I think it must have happened during or soon after the surgery.  He had a couple of strokes prior to surgery and had/has some left side weakness from those.  It does not seem worse than before, but it was in the weeks following surgery.  They did not do a scan afterwards, so I don't think we will know for sure when it happened.  I am just thankful he is doing well and hopeful it will not happen again.  I feel a bit less panicked than yesterday.  This website is a comfort, it is nice knowing someone else has been in your shoes.
Thanks again!

Matthew also had a stroke within days of his surgery.  It was actually the most severe one (his strokes being a 2, a 1, and a 3 on a scale of 1-10).

We were still in Boston at the time.  So we took him straight back to Dr. Scott.  He reminded us that the surgery is not an instant cure.  It takes time.  Matthew has done well since.  No more strokes.   Smiley

I hope you son continues to do well as the new blood vessels grow.

On a side note, Matthew also had renal artery stenosis.  How is it affecting your son's blood pressure?  I have always sworn that was what made Matthew's strokes so light.  When the blood flow was trying to stop, his heart just keep pushing it up there and kept the strokes from being any higher on that scale.

When you ready to deal with renal stenosis, I can tell you what we tried to do.  It would have been a perfect solution if we had done it earlier (before the doctors tried their stupid first solution).  Whatever you do, do not try angioplasty (the "open the artery with a balloon" thing).

Thanks Kim!  His blood pressure is currently being treated with 3 meds.  High BP was his first symptom that anything was wrong.  We were considering surgery for the renal artery stenosis with Dr. Stanley at University of Michigan when he had a more severe stroke last September (previous strokes went undetected) and we got the definite Moyamoya dx.  We are trying to deal with the Moyamoya first.  Like you, I think the high BP was a blessing in disguise and maybe prevented worse damage.

Thanks for responding...sounds like we have similar stories, I hope ours turns out like yours!
