Wisdom Teeth :(
Jun 24th, 2011 at 10:29pm

Shelbi's orthodontist took xrays yesterday and her wisdom teeth are starting to grow in at an angle Sad, I am worried that she will have to be put to sleep to have them removed and we all know the danger of being under anesthetics. It probably won't happen in the near future so I am going to ask the NS about our options when we see him in August. But if anyone has any suggestions please feel free to let me know. Just something else to stay worried about. Cry

Hi, there!!

My girls both have the same problem.  One of my girls has since had the wisdom teeth removed, and the other is scheduled for November (so as not to interfere with school sports schedules!!   Roll Eyes)

We chose to have an oral surgeon at Children's in Boston do it (mind you, we live less than an hour away from there), so that the anesthesiologist involved would be familiar with MM.  We had the oral surgeon consult with both our neurosurgeon (Dr. Scott) and our neurologist before hand, so that she was familiar with the "Do's and Don'ts" of surgery on a person with MM.

The surgery went fine, the only complications we had were with pain management after.  Because the girls are on aspirin, the neurologist did not want them to have Ibuprofen after the surgery - which I guess is typically the first line of pain meds they give for oral surgery, since it also reduces swelling.  My girls are also allergic to Morphine and Fentanyl, so they had to take Dilaudid - very strong!!!  It did nothing for the swelling, and actually my daughter had rebound headaches from it.  She ended up in the ER, with a migraine 5 days post surgery, and no reduction in the swelling.  After consultation with the neurosurgeon and neurologist, they allowed her to take ibuprofen for no more than 2 weeks.  It made a HUGE difference!  The swelling went down immediately, the migraine was gone, and she only needed to take it for less than a week, and then she needed no pain meds at all.

My best advice is to make sure the surgeon and anesthesiologist consult with your MM specialists before hand -to discuss ok anesthesia, and post surgery pain control.

I hope that helps!!  Good luck!!

Kristen

Thank you and yes that does help, that thought has kinda crossed my mind over the years since my oldest son had his removed, (he doesn't have MM), but since he had to go to sleep, I hate that your daughter had a longer then normal recovery and hopefully your other daughter won't have the same problems. This info will be helpful whenever I talk to her NS about it and he surely they have an oral surgeon at Children's in B'ham, if not then I guess we will have to travel. Whatever it takes to have the least chance of problems.

Thanks again,
Tina Peters

Holly had surgery on her hand and I wouldn't let them touch her until they consulted with the neurosurgeon and that I heard from both the neurosurgeon and the Anesthesiologist.

Guess what!  I have to have mine taken out too!  Mine are not impacted...so that's a positive...but one of them is bothering me so there're going to go ahead and take all out (don't want to have to do this again!).  My oral surgeon is definitely going to talk to Dr. Scott - he asked for his phone number before I even suggested speaking with him.  That gives me a lot of confidence with this doc!

I'm scheduled for the 29th this month...so hopefully all will go well!

Hey all!  So, I had 2 of my wisdom teeth out this past Friday (only 2 because I would have gone over my plan limit for the year and couldn't afford the extra cost at the moment).  Have to say - wasn't that bad!  My BP was monitored, I was put on an IV drip, Oxygen...and the whole procedure only took 20 minutes.  I'm taking Aleve for pain...which is minimal.  (My teeth were not impacted...they were fully out and not bothering me until recently).  Back at work today...just wanted to give an update!
