Problems wearing glasses?
Nov 1st, 2011 at 12:21am

Hi there,

Wondering if anyone experienced problems wearing glasses after surgery? My 12 yr old son had surgery June 2nd, but also experienced many complications and 2 additional surgeries on the left side. He has tried to wear his glasses a few times throughout the summer, the last time being this past week and the glasses keep cutting into his head on the left side only. I am assuming this side is still swollen and have emailed the dr to question him about this.

I feel so bad cause Christopher really wants to wear them and is squinting all the time now and is practically sitting on top of the tv and anything else he needs to see! lol

karen all I've heard is that you shouldn't wear anything tight after surgery.  would it be possible to see an Optometrist to have the galssess adjusted?  I worked for one years ago and we adjusted frames for patients all the time.

Christopher is not alone. After my surgery I could not ware my glasses either. My Optometrist austed the side I was having troubles with. Also my left ear was a bit lower then it used to be so that was also corrected. Once I healed enough I started wareing my contacts agian until I got the laser eye correction.
Hope this helps.

His surgery was June 2, but he also had 2 additional surgeries due to complications and I'm assuming the left side is still swollen (last surgery in August). I do want him to see the opthamologist again to see if the strokes  had any effects on his eyesight and will discuss the problem he is having with his glasses.

It is hard enough now to find glasses that fit correctly because his head is small and having down syndrome, the glasses are always slipping down on his nose due to it being flat.

Right now, I am padding the one side which he does not like and sometimes refuses to wear them! lol

I wore glasses at the time of my surgery and they ended up being too tight after surgery - they were leaving marks in the side of my head!  I ended up getting new glasses (I now wear contacts)...but any regular glasses I get now, or even sunglasses, I always check to see if they are going to leave enough room on the sides of my head.  I would just work with the optomotrist and explain they can't be too tight or too close to his temples.  They can usually bend the sides enough to leave enough room.  Or...even wire frames.

When I first woke up after my surgery my nurse actually took off the left side arm on my glasses so that I could still wear them. It was well after 6 months before I could get that arm put back on. I did get use to wearing them that way very quickly.
