At Stanford for Treatment
Nov 9th, 2011 at 9:09pm

Some of you may have read my previous thread regarding my wife's MMD battle. We arrived last week to Stanford Hospital for her pre-op testing. She just had her first surgery today (right side) and is doing well. Dr. Steinberg is recommending a second surgery while we are here.

Her blood flow/perfusion has increased 30X after surgery. The nurses, technicians and doctors here are great. After dealing with Johns Hopkins for 2 months I am glad we are where we are. We have been looking for an answer for her involuntary movements which Hopkins could not explain. Dr. Steinberg and his nurse, Teresa, told us they have treat some MMD patients with these symptoms. They are hemibalistic and would go away after surgery.

Dr. Steinberg and his team really live up their reputation. They are true Moyamoya experts and are much more compassionate to their patients. I wished U.S. News would agree because I do not believe Johns Hopkins deserves first in neurology/neurosurgery.

I'm happy to hear things are going so well for your wife now.  I have been wondering about her.

I agree with every good thing you have to say about Stanford and everybody there!

Brian, My wife had surgery on 11/8 we are staying in the H. O. M. E. apartments. She only needed one side done, so we are flying home on Thursday. You are right Steinberg, Theresa and the rest of the team were fantastic including the ICU and G1. We are so glad that we came to Stanford. If you and your wife want to have dinner with my wife and I (the creamery is fantastic) before Thursday, let me know, John

Thank you all again for all of the encouragement and informative contribution to this board. We just checked in this morning for her second surgery. My wife is even more nervous this time around. I am hopefull she'll pull through like the last. Hopefully, less nausea from the anesthesia and meds.

John, sorry I did not see your post sooner. I am glad to hear your wife is doing well. You are the third MMD patient that I know of that traveled from the east coast for treatment by D. Stienberg this past couple of weeks. We are also in the H.O.M.E apts. I wish you and your wife a speedy recovery and safe trip back home.

She did great for 3 days and had a seizure on the 4th day. The episode lasted about a minute and then she became unconscious. It scared the crap out of me, but I was told that some patients in Dr. Steinberg's series have issues post op on the left.

She was re-admitted to the hospital and stayed 2 nights. 1 night in Clinical Decision and 1 night in G1. They discharged her this afternoon. She had severe pain, headache, and nausea. She's doing much better now, but is showing signs of difficulty with speech and processing thoughts. We were told it's temporary, so I hope she bounces back soon. It's depressing and she's not on anti-seizure medication, Keppra, for two months. The doctors do not believe she will have a seizure again, and that the fluid build-up post surgery may have triggered the seizure. Thanks for asking.

Glad to be reading all this positive feedback on Dr. Steinberg. I was operated on 2 years ago on the left side by Dr. Arthur Day who was great but no longer in Boston. We have not met with Dr. Oglive at Mass. General yet as my bypass did not take and I'm back to were I started and now my right side is showing lack of blood flow as well. My husband has been reading a lot about Dr. Steinberg and is thinking of sending him all my tests etc. for his opinion of what road to travel next. Mass General the regular neuro doc. mentioned the drilling of holes around my skull to let blood vessels grow down from the scalp, but from what my hubby read on-line it's only really effective on kids. Has anyone had this treatment as an adult? Any ideas of how we should go about maybe contacting Dr. Steinberg ourselves?
Hope to hear from any thoughts
Kathy
