Looks like Moyamoya on the left now.
Dec 17th, 2011 at 9:25am

Had to take Destin in to the ER last Saturday.  Looks like it was a TIA.  She weak all over very sudenly and her mouth drooped on the left when she smiled.  Docs said that would indicate a problem on the right side of the brain. They did an MRI and confirmed it ws not a stroke.  Then they did a cerebralangiogram and discovered that the Moyamoya has started on the left.  I was really hopeful that she one be one of those rare cases that was only on one side.  She is a mess.  Trying to finish up her senior year in high school.  Really looking forward to college next fall and now this.  Her smile was crooked again on Thursday.  I called the neurologists that saw her in the hospital and left messages.  They never called back.  I didn't feel it was necessary to rush her back to the ER.  How do you make that call?  I know lots of you have TIA's and I'm assuming you don't go to the hospital everytime.  She missed another week of school.  Her teachers are being very supportive.  Don't know how far the Moyamoya has progressed.  Doesn't sound like it's bad yet.  The right side (surgery) looks good so we don't know why the left side of the face is affected.  Thanks for letting me vent!!!!!

I'm so sorry this is happening to Destin, I will pray for her and you. I have unilateral moyamoya also and often worry about progression to the other side, but I can only imagine how she stressed and scared must feel.  God Bless  Patty

Donna and Destin,

We're thinking of you!!  We're so sorry to hear the news, but are keeping our fingers crossed.  The girls said to tell Destin that if she does have surgery, we'll come down and hold her hand!!  The girls really want to talk to her, so we'll call soon!!  Hugs!!  Kristen

I got your message...wrote down your number and plan to call you during this week in the evening if that is okay?? I know I asked Dr. Decker and Dr. Van Loveren at TGH how do we know when to go to the ER...don't want to go there every time there is a TIA. They told me to wait 30 min after the onset of symptoms...if they haven't resolved then we have to go in.  Usually Matt's TIA symptoms come on and then within 15 minutes or less they have resolved themselves.  Hope this advice helps.  Matt had his first TIA that affected the left side this week.  His moyamoya was originally diagnosed on the left side..and as I said before Dr. Van. told us it was on the right side. We have been dreading and waiting for symptoms to appear...and it seems like they have begun.  We sent stuff off to Stanford Clinic several weeks ago, but trying to decide if we should just stick with TGH and have Dr. V do the surgery here.  What do you think since you see the same doctors here?
I will call you this week.
Take care
Shari

Kristen...guess the girls have texting.  I am so glad they met this summer!

Shari...we're [lanning to be in Orlando the nights of 21 and 22 so I won't be able to talk then.  Should be available tonight and Friday night if you see this message in time.  Otherwise I'm usually available.  Destin has only met Dr. V once but we plan to start seeing him.  Her surgeon is at Shands in Gainesville.  I will have to wait and see what we think of Dr. V.  What we have seen so far we like.   She loves Dr. Lewis at Shands though.  I also want to send her films to Dr. Steinberg and maybe Dr. Scott.  I don't think her right side has progressed very far but then I'm not the expert.  She just doesn't want to spend her first year in college feeling like a time bomb.

Donna and Destin -

In my opinion, the TIA's are your body's way of telling you - hey, pay attention to me!  In my opinion, I would want this taken care of right away, before it gets worse.  I would send copies of scans/films, what ever you can, to Dr. Scott and Dr. Steinberg, and see Dr. Lewis as soon as possible.  Who knows - maybe they will say no surgery yet...maybe they will say lets get it done now so you are ready for college in the fall. I know you are really excited to start college soon...but your body is telling you to pay attention to it first.

Just my opinion.  Good luck!  You can do it!!  Sending hugs and Holiday wishes from Philly!

Hi Shari,  we agree.  BUT Destin refuses to ruin christmas so we have an appointment the first week in January and I have already sent her films to Dr. Lewis.  I have to get more copies to send to Steinberg and Scott.   She had her first surgery during Christmas break. We checked out of the hospital on Christmas day and she syas she will not lose another Christmas to Moyamoya.  I asked her when (if she needs surgery now) would she choose to do it.  Her answer was "spring break"...like you can go in, have brain surgery, rest for a week and go back to finish your senior year.  Smiley

I got your phone message...I am going to call you soon.  I know you have been busy with holidays and my house has been crazy with four kids and a sick husband.  He is back in TGH tonight, mouth drooping on right side and right leg numb.  Running tests...I sent scans out to Steinberg..he wants to do surgery on left side again within the next two months and is checking angiogram scans to see if it is for sure on the right side and if so if he needs to have surgery on that side as well.  I love Dr. V.....but Steinberg seems to be very well versed in this disease.  What do you think? Is it worth traveling somewhere else? Do we just stay here for surgery?? Looking for some advice. We had seen Lewis back in august as well...Matt didn't really care for him (although I liked him).  Dr.V. talks to me via text...even text me tonight from Paris on his vacation! What a surgeon! Anyway...hope to talk to you soon. Let me know what you think.

Hi Shari,  Who did Matt's first surgery?  I thought it was done at TGH.  Since I haven't talked much with Dr. V yet I really can't give an opinion.  I have met Dr. Steinberg and have heard wonderful things about him...one of not the best for Moyamoya surgery in the country.  I wouldn't hesitate to travel to have him do Destin's surgery.  2 other young ladies that live in the area traveld to see him and loved him.  Destin loved Dr. Lewis but I can see where his personality might not click with everyone.  He's also an excellent surgeon.  When Destin needs her second surgery I'm not sure where we'll go.  You have the added worry of 4 kids so CA might be a long way to go but I would sure consider it with Matt's last experience.  Tough decisions all around.  Call whenever you can.

We saw Dr. V yesterday and we really like him.  He spent a lot of time with us answering questions.  Never made Destin feel like she was asking things that weren't important.  He gave very honest answers.  Looks like the surgery on the right is doing it's job just fine.  The moyamoya on the left is very minimal right now.  We all looked at before and after (surgery) angiogram results.  He pointed out the areas of concern and the good results on the right side.  She doesn't need surgery on the right yet.  She still has a brain full of blood vessels.  We will see a Vascular Neurologist on Friday and the "team" will work with her and do what is necessary to keep her healthy.  She was so worried that all of this would interfere with starting college in the fall.  He doesn't think her mouth droop is a TIA.  He feels like it is more connected to her migraines.  He did tell her to stay off roller coasters but that she cn continue to play the clarinet.  If she feels winded then take  a break.  I am happy that we have found someone we are comfortable with in Tampa.  Having our doctor 3 hours away was not very convenient or comforting.

I reread my post and I keep getting the "sides" confused...surgery was done on the right in 2008 and now we are watching the left...now that's clear I can have my coffe and maybe my brain will work better. Smiley
