Idea about the cost of surgery
Dec 6th, 2003 at 1:21pm

My Dad (56yrs) has been diagnosed as a severe case of moyamoya...I am thinking about taking him to Stanford for consultation, since the insurance out here in India is ludicrous, I've no faith in it..so I need to have an idea about the expenses if he has to be operated upon (EDAS,EMS)..any help in this regard would be highly appreciated.

Dear Robi,

You might want to contact Dr. Steinberg's office directly via email (gsteinberg@stanford.edu) or his nurse Teresa Bell-Stephens (teresab@stanford.edu).

I forwarded my angiograms for their review.  They held a conference and made a diagnosis.  They will let you know directly what they can and cannot do and what the charges are.

They have been very efficient and very fair in their responses and pricing.  Every case is different, so you may want to contact them directly.

Good Luck!

Hi Robi,

I had my surgery at University of Chicago one year ago and I don't have insurance either.  I don't know the surgery numbers off the top of my head but if it would help you I will look them up.

Here's what I do know:  my angios at U of C were $8,000-$10,000.  I was supposed to go to Stanford in October for another angio and they wanted $17,000- $25,000.  Quite a difference and one that I can't afford.   Although, Dr. Steinberg can and will negotiate HIS costs for surgery.  The hospital (tests, hospital stay etc.) will not negotiate on their prices at all.

It is a good idea to try and find out an estimate on the costs beforehand and both Dr. Steinberg's team and the hospital itself will be happy to help you with that.

I hope this helps some and do let me know if you want me to look up my actual surgery costs and at least give you some idea of what to expect.

Lisa

Thanks Lisa

I've contacted Dr.Steinberg and have mailed my Dad's angio to him...he has confirmed the diagnosis as MMD and feels surgery would yield excellent results, his RN says they would soon mail me an approximate cost for the entire procedure and would help me coordinate the trip. However 25 grand for an angio is quite steep even for US standards..especially when you get almost the same angio in India for around $700. Lisa I would definitely love to hear from u about your actual expenses. So that I can get ready financially. You can mail me at saurav_robi@yahoo.com

Regards
RoBi
